And your 2022 NFC West division winners are... the San Francisco 49ers!!!
Brock Purdy and the 49ers made it 7 wins in a row by taking down the Seattle Seahawks on the road 21-13 on Thursday Night Football. It was once again a masterclass by Demeco Ryans and the defense as they smothered the Seahawks offense throughout the game, allowing a measely 4.5 yards per play. Geno Smith was able to complete more than 70% of his passes yet still only managed 4.4 yards per pass attempt. The 49ers allowed next to nothing down the field all night and were consistently getting receivers to the ground almost immediately for short gains.
Nick Bosa was his usual disruptive self, but the return of Armstead the past few weeks has really brought a consistent menace from the pass rush. They aren't necessarily putting up big sack numbers every week but offenses are being forced to get rid of the ball quickly which is a key factor in the defensive success.
The coverage was also exceptional with the DBs and LBs making life difficult for all of the Seahawks receivers. Metcalf in particular was well handled by Ward throughout the night. For the game only 1 of the 10 Seahawks receivers that saw a target ended up with an average yards per reception above 10 - Will Dissly took his lone reception for 13 yards.
The defense came up with a key turnover late in the first half to help the 49ers take control of the game, with Jimmie Ward and Dre Greenlaw combining on a tackle of Travis Homer that knocked the ball loose. Charvarius Ward scooped the ball and nearly took it to the house, and two rushes later McCaffrey put the 49ers up 14-3. The defensive performance could have been even better if Greenlaw and Hufanga had been able to hold onto balls they got both hands to in the first half.
The offense took something of a back seat in this one, doing just enough to keep the team ahead as the defense took over the game.
Despite playing through a rib and oblique injury, Purdy was once again highly efficient and very poised throughout the game, making a number of very good decisions and well placed throws that got the offense rolling. His stat line again, while solid, doesn't look amazing, which is more a testament to how the 49ers controlled the game than a statement on his performance.
As with last week, the vast majority of Purdy's contribution came in the first 31 minutes of the game. As with last week, a big play by Purdy to start the third quarter put the 49ers well in control of the game, this time a deep pass to Kittle on a busted coverage for their second touchdown connection of the game. But this week, Purdy was also needed to make some plays down the stretch to maintain their lead and close the game out; he came through for the 49ers like a seasoned veteran.
With every passing week of solid performances by Purdy, the story goes from waiting for the other shoe to drop to one of believing this team has a chance to go all the way with Purdy at the helm.
McCaffrey had another big day as well, as the mid-season trade continues to look like a good one for the 49ers. CMC went over 100 yards rushing for the second straight week, adding another 6 catches as well. Aside from his first game as a 49er against the Chiefs where he was limited after just a couple of days to get acclimated, McCaffrey has been a key cog for this offense and it is no coincidence the team has gone 7 straight wins with him as a focal point on offense.
It's always a great feeling winning the division and securing a playoff spot. Even more satisfying when it happens by beating the Seahawks. This was a great team win.
And while I don't like making players play on a short week for TNF, the flip side is the 49ers now find themselves in the enviable position of having a 10 day rest before their next game - they effectively get a mini-bye week just a few weeks before the playoffs. And now that they have secured the division, and also ensured they finish no worse than the 3rd seed in the NFC, they are also now in a position where they do not need to unnecessarily risk or rush players back from injury for three more weeks.
How good was the signing of Mooney Ward? He may not be as good in coverage as Prime Time was but he's a much better tackler.
ReplyDeleteThe defense was all fired up for this game. It's now time to rest the bumps and bruises and get ready for the playoffs.
ReplyDeleteIs it possible - Montana, Young and Purdy?
Brock Purdy the guy that is making John Lynch and Kyle Shanahan look like geniuses and fools at the very same time.
ReplyDelete#69 with a clean sheet, 0 pressures allowed.
ReplyDeleteI was getting down on him, but he has improved last few games.
DeleteRazor
DeleteQuestion: Do you think the 9ers will resign him and his $10.8 contract next year? Or do you still believe they move Burford
to RT and Brunskill to RG?
I know they love him, but I'm sticking with Burford winning RT and Big Mike moving on.
DeleteShanny utilizing the Bill Walsh play vault warms my heart.
ReplyDeleteNever ceases to amaze me how QB's seem to thrive in this offense no matter who it is. It also leads me to believe that KS was talked out of Mac Jones two years ago because when you look at his history, the QB's he likes and excels with the most are the pocket guys who play within the system and Purdy is just the latest example of that. From Schaub, to Cousins, to Ryan, to Garoppolo, to Mullens, and now Purdy, there is a prototype for Shanahan. He had RGIII on a path to superstardom his rookie year, but he wasn't a guy Kyle or his father wanted which is why they took Cousins in the same draft. I'm not sure how things are going to turn out with Lance but the first NFL experiences between he and Purdy are night and day. A lot of that is due to Lance not playing a lot of football while Purdy started for 4 years. You can see it in their comfort levels when getting their first taste of NFL action. Could this be another RGIII/Cousins situation where the guy taken with a later round pick as an afterthought winds up being the starter long term? Too early to say but very similar situations in a lot of ways.
ReplyDeleteShanahan has already outlined and confirmed that Jones was the guy he liked that convinced him to trade up believing no matter what there would be a QB he liked available. He has also confirmed it came down to Jones and Trey.
DeleteGiven he has been open about that, I don't see why we shouldn't believe Shanahan when he also says he fell in love with Lance and his potential and Lance was his pick.
Tbh it makes sense too. Yes, Lance is raw, but one of the things that made him an attractive prospect was his intelligence and willingness to distribute the ball within the confines and structure of the play (and he showed it in a pro-style offense). His biggest issue is just a lack of experience.
Good seeing NAE
DeleteThanks Razoreater. Wish I could contribute more often but always read as much as possible and post when I have some time. You guys continue to do a great job. Thanks.
DeleteScooter my point was that I think he was talked into Lance. I don't think he changed his mind based on watching tape and meeting the kid. I don't know that for sure obviously but Lance is an outlier in the type of QB's KS usually favors and we are seeing again how much success he has with guys who don't jump out as physical specimens, but are more cerebral and willing to play strictly within the confines of the system.
DeleteLance is very smart and athletic and could still be the guy moving forward, but I can't help but look at the history of the QB's KS has Coached and wonder if Purdy winds up overtaking him. Way too early I know but I just thought I'd throw it out there.
Shanahan has already said he wasn't talked into him. That he fell in love with the possibilities after watching his tape and meeting him. I don't see why Shanahan would lie about that after being very open about the rest of the process.
DeleteNAE,
Delete"Scooter my point was that I think he was talked into Lance."
Based on listening to one-on-one interviews of Kyle on radio and TV since 2017, I am pretty confident that Kyle's view of the ideal QB for his system has evolved from a pocket passer like Cousins to a QB who can execute designed runs (as opposed to moving around/scrambling to make a throw) -- the ideal candidate being Josh Allen. After Allen and the Bills administered the beat-down in 2020, Kyle openly expressed his admiration of Allen and how fortunate a team is to have a QB like him.
Kyle comes across as very systematic but obstinate and I'm pretty sure he doesn't get "talked into" anything. He's always been very transparent and consistent about his views on what he looks for in his players at each positions, including what they need to show to him to be a starter.

ReplyDeleteQUESTION: Will the 9er VS Commanders game be a preview of the 9ers first 2022 playoff game? It's looking like it could be...
ReplyDeleteENJOY IT 9ER FANS!
I was wrong on a couple of things:
ReplyDelete1) CMC has become the focal point of the offense and the trade is looking better by the day.
2) Defense is legit. Except the 2nd half of the Chiefs game, D has been lights out and that too with constant churn along the D-line.
Surely John Lynch is an Executive of the Year candidate....Retaining/Resigning Deebo, Getting Jimmy G as backup on revised deal, CMC Trade, Jeff Wilson Trade, Brock Purdy selection...all home runs. Except Howie Roseman from the Iggles no one else is close.
@Razor - Nice prediction yesterday. That game should not have been close and should've been a win by 3 scores.
They took away 7 points on that bullshit call on Bosa. I don't care what he said, that was not roughing the passer.
DeleteRazor
DeleteAs I'm sure you already know, it's not the "CALL" that's the problem, it's the "RULE" that's BS! It needs to be Changed (but sure it won't be).
I'm waiting for a sacker to brace themselves as he's landing and busting one of their wrists. It's almost as if the NFL is asking the defensive player to sacrifice or put in jeapordy, themselves in order to keep the opposing quarterback healthy. Fucking stupid!

The 49ers expect to open Javon Kinlaw's return-from-IR practice window this next week
Some have said KS doesn't care about his players. Well Ward passed the concussion protocol last night, but 'KS' not the doctors, felt something was amiss and wouldn't play him anymore. Sure, enough this morning Ward is in concussion protocol.
ReplyDeleteI've always been a fan of constructive criticism, but most of the attacks on Shanny have been deconstructive criticism.
DeleteConstructive criticism is needed for advancement, the other stuff was/is just wrong not in content which is debatable but in delivery.
DeleteI think the biggest issue some fans have is not understanding that even really good coaches aren't infallible. Shanahan will make mistakes. All coaches (and players) will. Bill Belichick does too. Andy Reid does too. But you don't have the success this team has had since 2019 without being a darn good coach.
DeleteIn terms of criticism of Shanahan about not caring about his players, what a load of rubbish. If the players felt he didn't care for them, they wouldn't play for him. It's as simole as that. The most telling story on how Shanahan cares for his players and has his players wanting to play for him is none other than Trent Williams. Now he is a guy that can tell you what it is like playing for an organisation that doesn't care for its players. He went out of his way to make sure he was traded to Kyle.
Scooter
Delete"I think the biggest issue some fans have is not understanding that even really good coaches aren't infallible. Shanahan will make mistakes.
TO YOUR POINT: Giving up all those draft picks to move up and pick Lance in Rd #1 VS drafting Mr Irrelevant, the last draft pick in the draft. Live and learn!
Let's not crown Purdy yet and let's not write Lance off yet either. The stories of these two are still in their very early days.
DeleteI think we should just be happy we have two young QBs locked up on relatively cheap contracts, both of which appear capable of running Shanahan's offense.
Obviously a great win and Purdy has been remarkable for a rookie. However, Hufanga has me concerned. This is now multiple games where there has been a mixup in coverage that led to a wide open receiver for a TD. I don't know if it was Hufanga's fault or not, but it seems like he was involved in all of them. He likes to anticipate and it's one of the reasons he has 4 interceptions this year, but it looks like it is also getting him into trouble. In the playoffs, those kind of mistakes can easily result in a loss.
ReplyDeleteIt's a fine line where you don't want to inhibit his instincts while at the same time staying assignment sound.
DeleteJordan Mason is averaging 4.73 yards per carry this season.........AFTER CONTACT.
ReplyDeleteAwesome, a really nice change of pace back.
DeleteFactor in it's against stacked fronts and it's even more impressive. No one is crying about Wilson for a 5th anymore.
DeleteI still query the wisdom of trading Wilson with the injuries they've sustained at RB this season. But I also don't believe the team actually wanted to trade him, but rather was a case of giving a player they respected his wish. And that I have no problem with given they had just replaced him and when fully healthy have the depth to not need him.
DeleteWilson, inactive tonight.
DeleteScooter, tbh he did have a propensity to fumble along with injury concerns.
"But I also don't believe the team actually wanted to trade him, but rather was a case of giving a player they respected his wish. "
DeleteScooter,
That is not quite correct. Lynch said in his weekly KNBR interview that when Wilson approached him about a trade, he told him that they valued him and they would trade him only if they got the draft compensation in keeping with that value. Kyle also confirmed that the Miami offer of a 5th was a surprise and an offer they could not refuse.
A third-string, replacement level player for a fifth round pick is a very good trade, IMO, when the replacement, Mason, is considered by the coaches to be ready to step in.
Ah, yep, I remember that now. You are correct.
DeleteGo Colts!
ReplyDeleteColts 20 - 0 early in the second
DeleteColts 30 - 0 5:50 left in the half.
DeleteColts 33 - Vikings 0 halftime
DeleteVikings are frauds.
DeleteScooter
DeleteUNFORTUNATELY......The frauds just scored
Vikings 21 Colts 36 4th Qtr; 10:42
Correct me if I'm wrong. If Colts win, 9ers move into 2nd seed?
DeleteCorrect, GEEP.
DeleteEven if the Vikings come back and win this they are frauds. Their record hinges on winning a lot of close games. It isn't sustainable. They haven't put one team to the sword all season, despite playing some bad teams, but been the recipient of a couple of spankings.
I get the old adages of 'good teams find ways to win' and 'you are what your record says you are', but in the case of the Vikings those adages are illusions that mask some flaws that will sink them eventually.

Brock Purdy's last three games:
59 of 84 (70%)
678 yards
6 passing touchdowns
1 rushing touchdown
1 interception
113.3 QB rating
If Purdy maintained that pace over the course of a season, he'd be in the neighborhood of 3,800 passing yards and 40 total touchdowns. #49ers
Good to see Jeff Saturday has brought grit and fight to the Colts...
ReplyDeleteWill that be Buckner's legacy, being part of a defense that allowed the biggest comeback in NFL history?
DeleteGotta feel bad for Buck. Gets traded from the 49ers just after they finally come good, to join a Colts franchise that was on its way to becoming a joke.
DeleteBuck chose the extra few millions over the winning team that drafted him. Absolutely understand his decision but feel no sympathy for him whatsoever.
DeleteFans fell for his splash plays -- gap penetrations that led to sacks. But he was always an average run defender for a three down tackle. He wanted to be paid like Donald and Chris Jones but he was never elite like those two.
I watched two games in Week 11 where the playmaking difference showed up starkly on almost identical plays. KC was playing Chargers and in the late fourth quarter Herbert was leading the offense down the field. Chiefs played man D, Herbert saw running room in the middle and took off. But Chris Jones basically went around the guard, grabbed Herbert with one arm as he ran past and sacked him. Chargers lost by 3 points.
In the other game, Saturday's Colts were ahead of Philly 16-10 late in the fourth quarter. In an almost identical play, Hurt looked around and finding no one open just ran up the middle past Buck, who was tied up by the guard, and scored a TD. Colts lost the game by 1 point.
Buck is a good but not great run defending DT. As you say, he can get blocked out of the play a little too often for my liking. Armstead is superior to Buck in this regard. But Buck is an excellent pass rusher for an interior DL.
DeleteNow that Armstead is playing DT full time I wouldn't trade him for Buck. But in terms of chasing the money, the difference in contract between what he got and what Armstead got wasn't much. I don't believe the 49ers traded him because they couldn't pay him. Nor because Armstead was cheaper. They traded him because they couldn't pay both Buck and Armstead, and they (rightly) believed there wasn't much of a gap in talent between the two but they could get better draft pick compensation by trading Buck rather than letting Armstead go in FA.
So... in terms of having no sympathy for him for chasing the money... I really don't think that had anything to do with him being traded. 49ers have shown they are willing to pay their guys at premium rates. Just chose not to with Buck.
Offensive player of the year hopefuls.
ReplyDeleteGarrett Wilson WR New York Jets.
Christian Watson WR Green Bay Packers.
Kenneth Walker RB Seattle Seahawks.
Chris Olave WR New Orleans Saints.
''If'' Brock Purdy "balls out", does he have enough credentials to become offensive rookie of the year? He will have six games under his belt, beating potential playoff teams Dolphins, Bucs, Hawks, Commanders. (Dolphins is technically JG game but Purdy played 90 percent of the game I give it to him.)
None of the offensive rookies have been clear cut standouts (I can't believe Watson is even in consideration). Good chance none of them help take their team to the playoffs. If Purdy continues to play well I think he has a chance.
DeleteWe've somehow got to draft Frank Gore Jr!!
ReplyDelete3rd round?

THE GAME TO WATCH THIS SUNDAY NIGHT:
ReplyDeleteThe winner of the Giants VS Commanders will likely be the team the 9ers play in the wild card at Levi’s
I hope both the Rams and Packers lose.
ReplyDeleteThey don't have to play to be losers, they've already accomplished that
ReplyDeletedistinction.
Fun fact: the 49ers have forced the most fumbles in the NFL since 2017. They’ve forced 100 fumbles in the Shanahan era
ReplyDeleteNice!
DeleteIts crazy to think that both Harbs and Shanny, guys brought in because of their offensive mindset, turn out to have better defenses than their offenses
DeleteBoth old school type coaches. I always thought it was interesting hearing right after Shanahan and Lynch were hired how their focus was going to be on building the defense from front to back. Rarely heard anything about the plan for building the offense. Made the defense the priority right off the bat.
DeleteRelated fun fact: Niners' opponents this season are 1-12 in games following the Niners game. Niners have a way of putting the hurt on their opponents.
DeleteKalia time? Looking forward to this guy:
