Week 5 Matchup: San Francisco 49ers vs. Carolina Panthers

Good afternoon and welcome to the live blog for the first of a two week east coast gambit of games for the 49ers. Jimmie Ward is back and Akeem Spence has been added to the roster. Looks as though Tevin Coleman will be Wilson's primary backup. Avoiding turnovers, penalties and the 49ers should be 3-2 heading to Atlanta next week. Go Niners!

    1. Moving from one's comfort zone of the old team to fresh pasture with new teammates, coaches and organization can have an unsettling effect, as Baker and Russ are finding out.

    2. Mood, to my eyes Wilson looked like he was in decline last year.

      Delete
    3. Won't disagree -- but difficult to believe that he's suddenly become as bad as he's looking. He's currently on course of playing himself out of the HoF.

      Delete
    4. Imho it's a combo of decline and bad system fit.

      Delete
    5. Yeah, Wilson is his own system. A rookie head coach and a couple of key offensive weapons missing, it's going to be tough slogging all season up there.

  2. Time to get a blowout win. This is the kinda trap game that championship teams dominate and get blowouts in.

    Go Niners 31-13

    1. That'd be glorious but I'm thinking more of a 10 point victory.

    2. I put a couple of bucks for the Niners to cover the spread, but I have difficulty seeing a blow out unless there is a complete Baker meltdown. Panthers' D is pretty decent and the Niners' offensive production is pretty mediocre as of now. Panthers are desperate for a win. Add a short week and playing on the road after an emotional win, I can see a relatively close game.

  3. Defenses travel well and the Niners have a good one. If the Niners are turnover free they win big.

  4. Ted Nguyen pointed out one of the big improvements in Niners' pass D: they were last in defensive EPA on passes targeting the sideline to numbers on each side of the field. This season they rank fourth.

    Bosa in a radio interview this week remarked how the improved coverage has helped the rush -- QB's are hesitating and double clutching and they are getting more pressures,etc. as a result.

      Shanahan said that Carolina’s third-down blitz packages are the craziest/most exotic that he’s seen in the NFL for quite some time. Will be interesting to see if the Panthers keep their foot on the gas even without both starting safeties. Could make for a boom or bust dynamic

    2. Jimmy G has been very good against the blitz in the distant past. Not so much in the recent past, IIRC.

  5. We'll be getting a pissed off Falcons team at home after this beat down by the Buccaneers.

  6. Will Ryans submit a job application with a 10-point-or-less game?

  7. Not getting to watch this one live but following the score and play-by-play. Sounds like the 49ers are moving the ball well and should be well ahead but silly errors have been a factor and keeping the Panthers in the game.

    1. Also... absolute a gut punch having Jimmie Ward get injured again. Hopefully won't be long term.

    2. Fumbles, penalties and now a blocked FG. Doing everything in their power to keep the Panthers in this game. We've seen this story before, too many times in recent seasons.

  8. When the offense can't get out of their own way, send the defense out there to win it for you.

  9. If ever there is such a thing as an ugly blowout, this game is it!!! God, every week looks like one significant starter is going down.

    Special teams play stinks (even before Gould injury), but finally there is some life in this offense. I would say we are at 80% potential. Have to get cranking on that.

    Dare I say that except us, the entire NFC west is going to be winless this week? I hope that holds.

  10. Honestly, f injuries. Fingers crossed none of them are serious, though sounds like E-Man could be.

    1. Sounds like ACL for E-man. Broken hand for Ward.

    2. That sucks. Hopefully Verrett is able to come in, return to his 2020 form and stay injury free.

    3. If not Verrett, probably go with Womack.

    4. Kyle Shanahan has no idea how to keep his players healthy. He'd play all his starters up 40 points with 2:00 left in regulation. Why? Because he doesn't have any common sense!

    5. "The San Francisco 49ers fear a severe knee injury for Emmanuel Moseley. WITH THE GAME WELL IN HAND late in the fourth quarter, the veteran cornerback went down with what appeared to be a leg injury. Moseley needed assistance from safety Talanoa Hufanga and a medical staff member to make his way to the sideline."

      It's a rough sport, and injuries happen, but Kyle Shanahan is the reason why the 49ers consistently lead the league in injuries! That's a fact!

      Delete
    6. The injuries suck, but didn't that happen when the score was 30-15? You can't just take all your starters off at that point. Give the Panthers a quick score and it becomes a one score game.

      Delete
    7. What a POS, dude go root for a different team you embarrassment

    8. Don't kid yourself, this game was well in hand. It was mop-up duty! If you can't trust your backups to handle mop-up duty, you need new backups, because this is the result. Needless late game injuries are what Kyle's team's do better than everyone else. It's a dang epidemic, and the proof is in the numbers! Kyle Shanahan's teams' simply can't be this unlucky.

      You would think at some point Kyle would make some adjustments, and pull key starters when games are in hand late in the 4th QTR. Unfortunately, Kyle can't coach, and chew gum at the same time, so we see the same results year in and year out!

      Delete
    9. Especially on this ridiculous artificial turf.

      A smart HC pulls his key starters up 15 with a little over 4:00 minutes left, and the opponent backed up inside their own 10 yard line, with only 1 TO.

      I would give Kyle a pass if I thought he was at least close to pulling his key starters, but history says that's not the case. For whatever reason, Kyle has a history of playing his key guys late in games, well after the outcomes has been decided.

      You would think Kyle would figure out at some point, but he's in year 6 and he hasn't figured it out yet, despite leading the league in injuries nearly every season. My guess is he never will figure it out, and his teams will always be among the most injured teams in the league.

      Delete
    10. "A smart HC pulls his key starters up 15 with a little over 4:00 minutes left, and the opponent backed up inside their own 10 yard line, with only 1 TO."

      Like who? Give me some examples of where a HC has done that with more than 4 minutes on the clock and only a 2 score lead.

      I think you'll find most HC's would have done the same as Shanahan there. It's just unfortunate Moseley got hurt.

    11. On a more positive note - great value signing Tevin Coleman. I didn't even realize he was out there unsigned. He's especially terrific as a pass catcher out of the backfield.

      But I still don't understand why 225 lbs RB - Jordan Mason can't get any carries, especially in short yardage. He's clearly a superior short yardage option than Coleman, and probably Wilson as well. Why not preserve Wilson's health a little by giving a few of his carries to Mason? And this is another example of Kyle's utter inability to understand the value of preserving the health of his key players. He always runs his RB's into the damn ground!

    12. Scooter, it's Baker Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers. They came into today 25th in points scored, and DEAD LAST in the NFL in YPG! The Panthers didn't have a chance in hell of scoring 15 unanswered points late in that game. They were backed up inside their 10 yard line, and BTW, they couldn't stop the 49ers from moving the ball. Put in a couple capable backup CB's, and play a soft shell, and get out of there without anymore key injuries. You see teams do it all of the time. It's the first of back-to-back road games on artificial turf, you have to be smart and preserve your keys players when the opportunity presents itself. It's like late last year, when Kyle was playing and injured Garoppolo late in a game that was already in hand, rather than bringing in Lance to preserve Jimmy. Like I said, I don't know if Kyle just doesn't have the ability to make the decisions in game, but he has a history of not pulling his key starters after the outcome is determined, and he's going to do it again. Mark my words, this won't be the last unnecessary injury this season.

      Keep this receipt!

    13. Kyle just doesn't get it, and how do I prove it?

      Look at his team's injury history, week in and week out. It can't simply be bad luck, Scooter_McG, especially when you realize that they play their home games on the best grass surface in their NFL!

      Delete
    14. It's the exact same story every dang season. The only question is .... at what point do the injuries catch up to Kyle's team this season? I'm guessing the time to pay the piper is coming soon enough, and that's unfortunate because this is a heck of a team when healthy.

    15. In an IQ contest with a head of lettuce, this clown (insert name), would have to cheat to come in 3rd place!

    16. Man, if Shanahan had done what you suggest and the Panthers marched down the field to score you'd also be the first to lambast him for taking guys out of the game while it was just a two score game.

      And yeah, just because the Panthers starting offense is no match for the 49ers starting defense, the chances are they could move the ball against backups. It's still a starting NFL unit with some quality NFL players.

    17. You can go on believing that Kyle Shanahan is simply the unluckiest HC when it comes to injuries, frankly, it doesn't surprise me. This isn't the sharpest group of bloggers. You guys might not even understand how the law of averages work in this world, and that's fine also, just don't use it as an excuse, because that no longer holds water. But for the record, the 49ers have been in the bottom 4 teams in the NFL in terms of injuries, 4 years running. And every year during Kyle's tenure, his team has ranked in the top 10 for injuries. No other team has come even close to having this many injuries. I'm just glad that Kyle isn't in charge of something more important., like the military! SMH!

      Except perhaps for Mosely, the elite players and other starters will be rested and ready for the play-offs.

      On to Atlanta to hunt some falcons!

  12. Emmanuel Moseley's pick-six was the 49ers' eighth pick-six since 2019, tied for the most in the NFL. All eight have come against former No. 1 overall picks (Jared Goff, Matthew Stafford, Jameis Winston, Baker Mayfield).

  13. 9ers work out 6 players, including a couple familiar faces. All linemen on each side of the ball
    * DL Kevin Atkins
    * DL Sheldon Day
    * DE Austin Edwards
    * DL T.Y. McGill
    * OL Rashod Hill
    * OT Kendall Lamm

    * The 49ers signed Atkins as an undrafted rookie following this year’s draft.
    * Day is another familiar face. He was with the 49ers for part of the 2017 season, all of 2018 and all of 2019 before moving on to the Colts
