  2. However, ESPN 710’s John Clayton, who has his boots on the ground in the Pacific Northwest, told Sacramento’s 1140 KHTK radio’s Nick Cattles that Wilson simply wasn’t going anywhere.

When asked about the chances of a Wilson trade, Clayton had a quick response, “none.”

This has been the same thing I’ve been saying since February. First off, if you trade Russell Wilson, now all of a sudden, you lose five possible wins because he’s that good of a quarterback. Secondly, he just got a $5 million roster bonus on Friday, and you’ve got a $31 million cap hit for dead money.

Do you want to have $31 million dollars [in dead money], lose your quarterback and have no quarterback? He will not be traded.

That's one qb off the f/a board. Next one to fall will be Rodgers.

    1. Yeah, Wilson's departure was not realistic. He can now soak in his hot tub, champagne glass in hand, and blow nano-bubbles at Pete and Schneider and watching the patchwork O line of his declining team developing new holes.

It appears Jimmy G has scheduled shoulder surgery and will not be throwing till summer. Probably won't affect his trade market a whole lot.

  4. Another departure from the coaching staff - Bobby Turner.

    1. Twitterers say he's going under for surgery and at his age probably going to need a lot of time to recover.

    2. There was no announcement of retirement. IIRC, about 8 years ago, he took a year off for health reasons. However, he's 72 and his return is not a certainty.

  5. Arians seems to be nixing any possibility of a trade of an "unretired" Brady to a contender in the conference.

With all due respect, it's NOT Arians call!
Any decision about Tom Brady playing for another team will be made by the owners, (the Glazer family)

  6. Garoppolo is expected to be sidelined until the summer as he recovers from the surgery.

While that would mean a limited role during offseason work, Schefter adds that there is still “significant” interest in Garoppolo from other teams in the market for a quarterback and that he is likely to be moved in a trade once the new league year is underway.

  7. LETS HOPE IT'S TRUE.....

    * Jimmy Garoppolo trade rumors: 49ers QB drawing significant interest.
    * It remains unclear what the 49ers will be able to fetch in a Garoppolo trade, but if his market is as competitive as Schefter reports, San Francisco should be able to move swiftly.
    * I'm down with a 2nd round and a 4th round draft pick for JG......MAKE IT HAPPEN JL!

    1. As GEEP says, hopefully some sort of bidding war happens.

But end of the day the 49ers might need his salary off the books more than they need compensation for trading him, so might just have to accept less than they would like to get in return.

49ers RB coach Bobby Turner fully expects to return in 2023 after rehabbing from two operations and taking 2022 off

    For me, that's fantastic news!

  11. Not sure about anyone else, but I've never been less excited about the scouting combine than I am this year! Not sure if it is not having a 1st round pick or something else, but man, really weird not being super into the draft yet.

  12. About DJ Jones/

"If his objective is to stay here, he made it really hard," Lynch said via Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area. "I do think it's going to be challenging."

    1. Unfortunately I think Lynch is correct. His level of play in 2021 should see him get paid quite handsomely by someone.

      Delete
    2. Yea, I never expected Jones to be here next year. They're not going to devote that kind of money for that position.

  13. "Elijah came in and had an unbelievable year," Lynch said. "We call him 'Drano' because he always finds the right gap. It's kind of like putting the Drano down the drain and it just finds it. That's what we call him because of his natural run instincts."

  14. LOOKING MORE AND MORE LIKELY, THE BIG THREE WILL NOT BE TRADED. AT LEAST NOT THE 2022 SEASON!

    * The team most mentioned as a trade destination for Deshaun Watson has been the Miami Dolphins. That no longer appears to be a possibility.
In no uncertain terms, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier told reporters at the NFL combine, that the team will not be trading for Watson.
The Dolphins aren't alone in holding off Watson for now, as possible suitors wait to see if Watson is indicted by a federal grand jury and, if not, what discipline he receives from the NFL.

    * Seattle HC Pete Carroll: "We have no intention of trading Russell Wilson."

    * And the GB Packers are going all in trying to keep Aaron Rodgers.
Ian Rapoport reported Monday, the Packers and Rodgers' representation are working on a short-term deal that would make Rodgers the highest-paid player in the NFL on a per year basis.

    1. Not to mention the "5 numbers ones" Arians said it would take to pry loose Brady were he to unretire. :)

That decision is above Arians pay grade. Tom Brady playing for another team will be made by the owners, (the 3 Glazer brothers)

    3. True that Geep. But it would be interesting to see the fallout of going against the HC's *strongly* stated position. Would certainly had the pundits tongues wagging for a news cycle or two.

  16. I'm in the process of doing my Excel spreadsheet from The Athletic. In anticipation of the Scouting Combine, here are some players I am interested in seeing given the Niners' draft needs (Edge Rusher, Center, Cornerback, Safety, depth at Wide Receiver and Tight End, possibly depth Tackle and Guard) and WHERE they are drafting (thus, no need to consider the 1st round candidates):

    EDGE Myjai Sanders, Cincinnati
EDGE Arnold Ebiketie, Penn State (really interested in him in the 2nd round)
C/G Dohnovan West, Arizona State (4th round area)
S Jalen Pitre, Baylor (2nd round)
S Kerby Joseph, Illinois (3-4th round)
    S Kolby Harvell-Peel, Oklahoma State (6th round)
CB Kyler Gordon, Washington (may not last to Niners' 2nd round pick)
CB Tariq Woolen, UTSA (hear he is going to test out of this world, which may raise him from his 3rd-4th round status)
CB Cam Taylor-Britt, Nebraska (5th round)
EDGE Josh Paschal, Kentucky (5th-6th round)
WR George Pickens, Georgia (because of his injury, may slip to 2nd round)
WR Kyle Philips, UCLA (slot receiver, but given how he did in the Senior Bowl may be out of 3rd-4th round range now)
WR Calvin Austin III, Memphis (slot receiver, maybe he gets to 2nd round?)
TE Cade Otton, Washington (5th round)
TE Jeremy Ruckert, Ohio State (3rd-4th round)
TE Greg Dulcich, UCLA (2nd-3rd round)
TE Derrick Deese, Jr., San Jose State (6th-7th round; really just interested because of his Dad's Niner history)
G Thayer Munford, Ohio State (4th-5th round)
T Bernard Raimann, Central Michigan (2nd-3rd round; another Central Michigan tackle a la Joe Staley?)
T Max Mitchell, Louisiana (3rd-5th round)

And two players I really want to see as depth pieces and am somewhat biased towards:

RB Tyler Badie, Missouri (small guy, but we haven't had a true third down receiving back in Shanahan's years with the Niners)
QB Dustin Crum, Kent State (7th round-undrafted; has mobility skills along with being a 2.5 year starter)

    1. Nice list.

Would be ecstatic with Ebiketie, but no way he lasts till 61 IMHO. Unless we trade up...which is gonna be costly.

  18. The Shanaplan: How many needs do the 49ers have on the offensive line?
    * John Lynch provided an update on Mike McGlinchey and also hinted at Alex Mack returning next season.
Expecting McGlinchey to be fully recovered and 100% himself by the time training camp starts feels less and less likely with the more information, or lack thereof, that comes out about Mike’s injury. The worst-case scenario would be using more resources to fill the right tackle position while paying McGlinchey his guaranteed fifth-year option of $10.8 million. It would have been difficult to predict McGlinchey missing eight games a year ago.

    * Lynch also said, “we are keeping it open,” in regards to bringing Verrett back and acknowledged that he’s talking to agents. “That’s a position, you can’t have enough of them, and Jason is a really good one, when healthy. His problem has been staying healthy.

  19. Bobby Turner taking a year off after scheduled surgeries

    * A report Tuesday indicated 49ers running backs coach Bobby Turner was stepping away from the team but not retiring. * 49ers General Manager John Lynch filled in the blanks Wednesday.
    * Turner plans to take a one-season hiatus but is expected to return in 2023.
