ReplyDeleteSome minor coaching changes and minor signings
ReplyDeleteThe assistant offensive line coach is leaving. Wonder if that is an opening for Staley.
DeleteWould be nice to see.

ReplyDeleteHard to speculate what the Niners are going to do during FA and the draft until the JG quagmire is resolved. I would think if a trade were to happen it's going to be really quick. I believe JG wants to get settled as soon as possible and of course it behooves the Niners to get it done as they too can get settled in their new direction.
ReplyDeleteJimmy needs to go, ASAP!
ReplyDeleteThe good news for the 49ers is that I highly doubt that they will have any apprehension about trading him to another NFC team. That should help bolster his trade value!
The bad news for the 49ers is that Garoppolo is scheduled to be grossly overpaid again during the final year of his contract, and teams are well aware that the 49ers can't afford to keep him even if they wanted to, which they don't!
So if the 49ers want to get anything close to a 2nd round pick in return for Jimmy, they are going to need to find creative ways to make it happen. One way would be to take on a significant portion of his 2022 salary, which seems like a tough pill to swallow for a QB whom has already cost the team at least one World Championship, probably two.
I think the better way to go is to trade Jimmy on condition. But the problem with typical conditions like Jimmy needing to start a certain number of regular season games, and/or play well enough in order to meet those conditions, is that Jimmy is one of the most fragile, and inconsistent starting caliber QB's the NFL has ever seen.
The bottom line is that the 49ers don't have nearly as much leverage as they would like. QB needy teams are well aware of the fact that the 49ers NEED to trade Jimmy, and they would very much like to trade him before the new league year begins.
My best guess is that the 49ers will end up trading him for a conditional 3rd round pick that can turn into a 2nd round pick if by some miracle Jimmy stays healthy enough, and plays well enough, to meet said conditions.
Pete King has been adamant the 49ers will get a 1st round pick, and I'm not going to question his interconnections throughout the NFL. Jimmy isn't an elite talent but he has other highly sought attributes within the NFL. He's a leader. He's a proven winner. He's got experience in the playoffs and Super Bowl. He's a got a quick release. A team like the Colts that traded a conditional 2nd, that turned into a 1st, plus a 3rd for Wentz is the going rate for an average quarterback. Jimmy G is above average. With this quarterback class reportedly weak, a team like the Steelers or Broncos could do a lot worse than Jimmy by drafting a rookie with numerous question marks.

DeleteWith a weak 2022 QB draft, I see 5 teams that could be interested in trading for JG. Panthers, steelers, Saints, Commanders and the Bronco's.
If I had to bet, I'd say Denver may be willing to give up their 2nd Rd draft pick # 40, (more likely # 64), unless the the Washington Commanders offer their # 42 pick, or the Saints offer their # 49 pick.
Garoppolo addressed his future Tuesday during a press conference and said, according to ESPN, that he wants to go to a winning team.
Garoppolo said. “I was talking to GM John Lynch about finding the right destination and whatever the future holds, just doing it the right way." “I’ve got a long career ahead of me. I’m excited about it. I’m excited about the opportunities to come. I just want to go to a place where they want to win. That’s really what I’m in this game for. I’m here to play football, win football games and as long as I’ve got that and good people around me, I think the rest will take care of itself.”
San Francisco head coach KS and GM JL vowed to communicate with Garoppolo throughout the process of determining his future.
NOTE: JG'S no-trade clause expires when the new league year begins on March 16, the official day that trades can be made.
You need to go ASAP!

DeleteThird to Infinity.
DeleteI think Broncos or Washington but depends if he wants to go there.
ReplyDeleteTo me, Broncos make sense seeing as he'll be 5x cheaper than Rodgers and can also operate the quick-release passes that Hackett has implemented with Rodgers.... I also think that with Denver being for sale, Rodger's contract and the draft picks they would have to mortgage may pose a problem... and Denver is ready to win now, so it is a good fit for JimmyG, Pittsburgh as well. Carolina w Rhule on the hot seat another option, but I don't know if Jimmy would want to go to Washington with the defense taking a step back.
DeleteCourtesy of Jack Hammer, an article about Steve Young's comments on KNBR yesterday:
ReplyDelete"So, who does Young think the 49ers should put around the young signal caller?
“I think Trey’s going to be so raw,” Young said of Lance. “We’re going to witness his growth. Who is going to do the growth?”
“I’m a big fan of putting someone around you who can push you,” he continued. “So, I’m not looking to not do that. But more than anything, he needs someone older who can tell him ‘this matters’ or ‘this doesn’t matter.’ … Teach him how to study. How to memorize. How to be reflective recall. So that everything that comes out of him is reflective, and he doesn’t have to think about it.”

Sudfeld will play the role of Matt Moore. Maybe Andy Dalton doesn't get a starting job, and he plays the role of Henne; who backs up Mahomes.
DeleteWhat would you think about Jeff Garcia as a co-QB coach if he'd do it?
DeleteNo on Jeff Garcia for mine. Loved him as a player, but I don't think he would mesh well with Shanahan as a coach.
DeleteTo be honest, I'd like to see Klay Kubiak be brought over to the offensive side of the coaching tree. He's now had a year getting to cut up opposing offenses as part of his defensive QC duties, and we know he will be well grounded in 49ers/ Shanahan offensive principles.
As for a backup QB, they absolutely need to bring someone in (assuming of course they trade JG). And whoever it is should be someone that is experienced and can both push Lance, as well as be a mentor for him as needed.
DeleteAgree with Scooter on this one, George. Garcia isn't Shanny's type. I think he's comfortable with Scangarello who they brought back, and who also suggested and got the green light to procure, Sudfeld after Dalton signed with the Bears. Knowing they were going to draft Lance, it seems Rich is the one they trust to coach him.
DeleteI really think Kubiak is the guy Shanahan intends to groom to eventually be OC. Long family history there between the Kubiak's and Shanahan's. And you know Klay Kubiak will already have a strong foundation from his dad.
DeleteCarr would seem like a good fit in Arians' offense, while McDaniels is quite familiar with Jimmy G. Maybe Jimmy is in the silver and black next year.
ReplyDeleteI think McDaniels would be wise to keep Carr and maybe sign another decent TE *Schultz) and go 22 as that fits their system/style of play..
DeleteKyle Posey article today about challenges in returning/improving the oline:
ReplyDeletehttps://www.ninersnation.com/2022/2/4/22917449/49ers-offensive-line-who-stays-who-goes-this-offseason
It'll probably take $8 million a year to retain Tomlinson.
DeleteThey should draft a center high unless Mack decides to retire, in which case they'd have to go the vet f/a route.
Expect McGlinchey to start the season on PUP. They'll need to resign Compton to compete with Moore.
I have actually been wondering whether Moore could be a guy they could work at center. If nothing else so he can add depth all across the line on game day, but also just to see how he handles it and whether he could be a long term solution. He certainly has the athletic traits for it.
DeleteBut yeah... there are a few question marks around the OL heading into the offseason unfortunately.
49ers hire Anthony Lynn as Assisant HC.
