Week 10 Matchups to Watch: Rams at 49ers

By Scooter_McG

It's prime time in San Francisco, folks! The 49ers host division rivals the Los Angeles Rams on Monday Night Football in week 10.

Looking at the records of these two teams, and how they have played this season, the 7-2 LA Rams should have little trouble with a 3-5 49ers team who haven't won a home game in over 12 months. The Rams will also have additional motivation after last week dropping a game to fall one game behind division rivals the Arizona Cardinals atop the NFC West.

For the 49ers, they head into the game following the bitter disappointment of failing to build on the Bears victory by losing to the Kyler Murray and DeAndre Hopkins-less Cardinals last week. That loss, which included a listless defensive display and too many offensive miscues, kept them under .500 on the season and fighting for their playoff lives.

Yet despite the records and trajectories of the two teams, division rivalry games in prime time football can deliver the unexpected. An upset victory here for the 49ers can keep their flickering playoff hopes alive, while defeat will all but consign them to a lost season.

Here is what I will be keeping an eye on in this one.

Pressuring Stafford. In the lead up to Matthew Stafford being traded to the Rams there was some debate as to whether Stafford was really that good a QB given his failure to elevate the Lions to the playoffs most years. In 2021 Stafford has put up the best numbers of his career through nine games, has the Rams in a strong position for a playoff run, and is firmly in the race for MVP. Meanwhile, the Lions are winless through eight games. It may just be the Lions are a sorry organisation and Stafford was in fact a key reason they were able to win as many games as they did while he was there.

However, Stafford is coming off his worst game of the season last week in a loss to the Titans. In that game the Titans defensive front brought consistent pressure on Stafford from the beginning. It resulted in Stafford being taken down five times for sacks, forcing some bad throws, while having his lowest yards per attempt on the season by far.

If the 49ers are to have any chance in winning this one it will need to force Stafford into a similarly poor outing through defensive pressure.

The turnover battle. Through five seasons, Kyle Shanahan's 49ers teams have consistently struggled with giveaways and takeaways. The one year they had a positive differential they went to the Super Bowl. The other four years they have given the ball away more than they've taken it away and it has resulted in losing records in all four seasons (including this season to date).

If the 49ers are going to turn their season around and get the 6 or 7 wins they will need to make the playoffs, a key step will be turning around the turnover differential. Jimmy G has to avoid those careless mistakes he can be prone to and his offensive teammates need to do a better job of securing the ball. And the defense has to start making more plays on the football - five takeaways through eight games is abysmal.

Bully ball. Winning breeds confidence, while losing takes it away. That is evident watching these two teams this season as they have noticeably different demeanours on the field.

When you are down on confidence, teams (and individuals) can often make one of two mistakes - go too conservative or try too hard for the miracle plays. Neither one really tends to work very well. But what you can do to try and get some confidence back is try to make things simpler by leaning on your strengths. For the 49ers that strength is their running game and play action on offense, and a fast, aggressive defensive front 7 that attacks the football.

Let's see if they can get those elements rolling early in this one to help boost the confidence of the team and spark an upset.

  1. Ramsey has gotten most of his snaps from the slot until last week. I expect him to be Samuel's personal gnat. That means Kittle needs to dominate early. If he does, it might force Ramsey to detach. The only chance the 49ers have in this one is to get that running game going which will allow Jimmy to do what he does best. Play action and getting that ball out fast.

  2. “I’ve gotten run over, or really hit hard, by a running back once,” Williams said on Saturday. “It was Adrian Peterson of course, my freshman year in college. That was the last time I've really been like — and I got de-cleated by standing in the hole.

“Elijah didn’t de-cleat me but he definitely put one in my back and made me turn around and say, ‘Who the hell was that?’ I was like, ‘Damn, if that’s what they feel when they got to tackle him, I can see what he breaks so many tackles."

Mitchell is quite the bright spot in this years draft class.

    1. Elijah Mitchell is a fantastic fit in this current offense, but he's still a RB in a passing league, and he's still dependent on the 49ers OL. There's a reason that the Kyle has found success with so many different RB's, and it's because when this outside zone rushing attack is working in concert with the passing game, it's all about moving laterally until you find a crease, and then it's all about making that one cut and getting downhill in a hurry.

But the biggest thing that has tempered my excitement about Mitchell, is that I expect Trey Lance to change the entire dynamic of this rushing offense. once he takes over next season. I expect Kyle to run a lot more zone-read and RPO concepts, because if he doesn't, he's doing Trey and his entire offense a grave disservice, IMO. And frankly, I don't know if Elijah Mitchell have the same impact running RPO and zone-read concepts out of shotgun formation? I'm not saying he can't, but the jury is still out, because it's a very different style, and it requires a specific skill set, which is why I expect to see a lot more of Trey Sermon next season.

      Delete
    2. Sermon needs to take a page out of the Kittle playbook and carry a football everywhere he goes.

      Delete
    3. Trey Sermon doesn't have any career fumbles and he didn't have a fumbling issue in college. In fact, like my guy ERIC CROCKER said recently - Trey Sermon is exactly the same guy now, as he was coming out of college. EXACTLY the same guy. So I don't know what the 49ers thought they were getting with Trey Sermon, who is currently averaging 4.4 YPC as a pro (1st RND pick -Najee Harris, is averaging 3.6 YPC, and he's all the rage in Pennsylvania, BTW).

This goes back to why I am convinced that both Sermon and Banks were drafted with Trey Lance in mind. After OL GB Packers game (of course I was furious with Kyle's clock management) I was really furious with both Alex Mack and Dan Brunskill, and watching Trey Sermon trying figure out how to properly run Kyle's scheme, it hit me like a ton of bricks and I realized that the 49ers had used their first 3 draft picks on players who really weren't expected to contribute until 2022. Let's get real about Aaron Banks fit in an outside zone blocking scheme ... it's a ridiculously pi_s-poor fit, and it left a lot of draft analysts scratching their heads. And in reality, the same goes for Sermon, who did all of his best work in college running out of the shotgun formation, because he moves exceptionally well LATERALLY (because he has an uncanny ability to take large lateral strides), while Kyle has always preferred speedy RB who can get to the edge quickly, plant their foot, and hit the hole like a bat out of hell, getting to the 2nd level at the blink of an eye. Sermon doesn't have that same speed, but he's really good at taking the ball at the mesh point, and making a quick lateral move to hit the hole, which usually finds him running between the tackles, where his size and physicality is especially effective.

The good news is that I do think the 49ers used the top half of the 2021 draft to set themselves up pretty well for next season, but the bad news is that they weren't good enough to contend for a title this season while focusing most of their draft capital on players who weren't expected to contribute this season.

ShanaLynch's arrogance going into the 2021 offseason was simply mind-blowing! I mean, they just lost one of the top DC's in the league, and their 2nd best DE was a major question mark, and yet they thought they could simply ignore their glaring depth issues in their DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD, TE, QB, and the interior of their OL, as well as the realities of a rookie DC, and still contend for a title this season. Wow!

    5. And, yes, I am going to post about Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance again, because for me, this was the biggest head scratcher of all of the 49ers head scratchers this last offseason.

      Delete
    6. And, BTW, I am not a huge fan of Mac Jones in terms of his ability to lead his team to a Super Bowl, which has to be the goal when you trade 3 first round picks, and a third rounder for a QB, but if you want an example of a team that focused every single ounce of their 2021 offseason energy geared towards putting the right pieces around Mac Jones, in order to compete right away, look no further than the New England Patriots. Mac Jones is basically Jimmy Garoppolo 2.0, and their 2021 stats are absolutely identical. Mac Jones is a dink and dunk passer, but you can go a long ways with this style if you have the best defense in the conference, and an offensive scheme, including a really good OL, and a fantastic rushing attack, because all Mac has to do is be efficient in the dink and dunk game, keeping the offense ahead of the chains, and not making many backbreaking mistakes.

Unlike the 49ers, the Patriots drafted a QB and then they went all in on that QB, and it's paying huge dividends even though Mac will likely always be a game managing, middle of the pack QB who doesn't make a lot of mistakes. We'll see if he can stay healthy, and like I say, I don't think Mac will ever win a Super Bowl, but Patriots' fans are having a heck of a lot more fun the 49ers' fans this season, that's for dang sure.

    8. I heard he was coughing it up in training camp and his one carry that I remember he coughed it up. It says a lot when Wilson was elevated above him coming off an injury. Whatever he's doing, he'll need to do it better. Good news is he'll probably get an opportunity if they run the ball 35 times.

    1. Niners Faithful, mark tomorrow night - 11/15/2021 - on your calendars, because Monday Night Football is the MOMENT OF TRUTH for Jimmy Garoppolo, and the 2021 San Francisco 49ers! We are about to find out if this team has enough fight left in them to keep this season alive, and to justify keeping Trey Lance and a slew of other players off of the football field.

The goal in every season, isn't about finding a way to back into the postseason, and then hoping a praying that every single bounce goes your way, and every washed up veteran suddenly finds the fountain of youth once the playoffs begin. When your chances of making the postseason dip into the single digits, and winning the CA lottery is better odds than actually making it all of the way to the big dance, it's no longer tenable to play veterans who aren't expected to be part of the teams future, and let's face it, Jimmy Garoppolo is at the top of that veteran list!

The Bears, Colts by 3 points, Seahawks, Giants, Lions and the Texans. Other than TB, not one of the teams the Rams beat, have a winning Record! The two teams the Rams lost

  5. I'm old enough to remember when drafting Mac Jones in the top 5 was laughable.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Mac came into the game at:
      #22 EPA/play
      #21 DVOA
      #22 ANY/A
He's quarterbacking a DVOA offense that's 21st on a team with #5 defense. He had a great first half, but let's see how funny your memory is in 5 years!

      Delete
    2. Again, drafting Mac Jones top 5, was never in play for any team.

But, AGAIN, that was never my beef anyways.

Trading away 3 first round picks and a 3rd round pick for a QB who is dependent on playing on a team with the best defense in the conference, a terrific OL, and a fantastic running game, was my beef, and that hasn't changed Scooter!

The day that Mac Jones becomes a top 10 QB, and is the difference between losing and winning a Super Bowl, will be the day that those of us who thought it was inconceivable to spend all of that draft capital on a Kirk Cousins type of game manager, will admit we were wrong.

That's likely never going to happen, even though coaching probably matters more than anything, as does the quality of the team around the QB, and perhaps most importantly, a head coach having conviction in his QB, and building a team and an offense designed to take advantage of his particular skill set, that probably matters as much as anything.

      Delete
    3. Can MAC "beer belly" JONES (aka Big Mac) even stay healthy? He's made it through what, 9 games?

      Delete
    4. Again, everyone knew Mac Jones had the highest floor of all of the QB's. That he's winning on a team that is only giving up 18 points a game, with a terrific OL, and a fantastic running game, shouldn't surprise anyone.

Can he win a Super Bowl? I highly, highly doubt it, and for me that's the goal. Not only that, I hate to keep repeating myself, but I was fine with the 49ers standing pat and taking Mac at 12, even though he didn't seem like much of an upgrade over Garoppolo, at least he's going to be a lot cheaper than Jimmy for these next 5 years, and that matters a lot when it comes to building a contending roster, right? I didn't think taking Mac at 12 would have been a complete game changer, but I would have been fine with that considering the salary cap implications.

But giving up a KINGS RANSOM worth of draft capital for a guy who is dependent on all of those things to be effective? No chance, Scooter!

      Delete
    5. Mac has clearly been the standout rookie QB. And will have his team at 6-4 after this week. Not bad for a guy that had just 17 starts in college.

Do you guys feel he is already at his peak? That he won't improve?

Last I checked, Kirk Cousins wasn't playing the way Jones is playing as a rookie. In fact it took a few seasons for Cousins to get that level. And that is despite playing a lot more games in college.

Yes, we will see in a few years whether Jones is just an average QB or something more. But I still maintain that a lot of the resistance to Jones comes from physical abilities, which are the least important component of a QB. Mentally he is very sharp, with excellent ball placement, pocket awareness, movement and timing. Those are still the most important factors for a QB.

      Delete
    6. Scooter, as I said see me in 5 years when we have Lance's metrics to compare to Jones'.

      Delete
    7. And btw, I didn't say anything about trading up to #3 for him in my post. Just that people found it laughable he could be considered as a high pick.

I'd still have taken Lance over Jones. Nothing there has changed. I just think the narrative that Jones wasn't worthy of being a high pick was based on "scouting" the wrong traits.

      Delete
    8. I don't know anyone who who "found it laughable he could be considered as a high pick", Scooter. Wasn't he a top 20 draft prospect on most draft boards (somewhere between the 20th and 25th draft prospect), so considering how overvalued the position is, why would anyone think it was laughable for him to go in the top 5 or top 10. BTW, apparently most of us were right because he wasn't drafted until the 15th overall pick.

And again, just because he's winning with the best coaching staff in the NFL, a great defense, and a fantastic running game, doesn't mean he's worth drafting top 5, or top 10.

RG3 took the Redskins to the playoffs as a rookie in 2012, and the Skins didn't have nearly as good of a defense as the Patriots.

Heck, even the Patriots obviously didn't think he was worth trading up for, right, or don't you think they would have moved up a little bit to make sure they got him?

      Delete
    9. Really? Don't know anyone, hey? Odd, since you said multiple times he shouldn't even be considered a 1st rounder and was a product of the system and players around him! 😂

And by high pick, I mean high 1st round pick.

As for winning with a good team around him, same can be said of nearly all rookie QBs that had early success. Doesn’t change how he has looked.

      Delete
    10. Heck, even Brian Hoyer is lighting it up for the Patriots this season.

Brian Hoyer this season: 6 CMP on 7 ATT, 23.6 AVG, 1 TD, 0 INT, and a 139.3 Passer Rating

      Delete
    11. I said I didn't even think he looked like a 1st round prospect. To me, his skill set said 2nd round, but I do realize how overvalued the QB position is in the draft.

Again, I'm not all that impressed with Mac. Dak Prescott is far superior, and he went in the 4th round.

Just because Mac is winning under circumstances doesn't really impress me. I know how good the Patriots coaching staff is, and I see how good their defense and running game is.

I'd still say that Mac Jones was the 5th best QB prospect in his draft class, well, maybe the 4th, ahead of Wilson for sure.

      Delete
    12. But I wasn't high on Wilson either.

      Delete
    13. This is a classic example of a QB getting way too much credit just because his team is winning. I've seen this movie a millions times before, and I am NOT VERY IMPRESSED, to be honest!

      Delete
    14. I am however, impressed with the Patriots AS A TEAM! And their coaching staff is NEXT LEVEL!

      Delete
    15. Also, I'm pretty sure the Patriots would be even better with a vaccinated Cam Newton this season.

      Delete
    16. Lol! I am now convinced you haven't watched Jones play.

      Delete
    17. Well, Cam Newton outplayed Mac Jones in the preseason, in fact Cam was 8/9, for 103 yds, 11.4 avg 1 TD, 0 INT, 151.4 Passer Rating, during the Patriots 35-0 trouncing of the Eagles.

The Patriots are a good team this season, WAY better all around compared to 2020, and they are really well coached, that's a fact.

      Delete
    18. Let me put it another way Scooter ... I think the Patriots would be just as good with Jimmy G at QB, maybe even better, IF Jimmy were on a rookie deal like Mac Jones is.

      Delete
    19. And statistically, Mac and Jimmy are the exact same guy this season, and the 49ers have a dysfunctional offense, so ....

      Delete
    20. Difference being one is a rookie, the other a seasoned veteran. The fact Jones is playing like a veteran QB is why it is impressive.

      Delete
    21. That's true Scooter.

I am not disregarding what you are saying, BTW. You were probably a little more accurate in your assessment of Mac than I was. He's obviously better than a career backup.

That said, I'm certainly not overly impressed with the kid either. Yah, he's poised, and he does a pretty good job playing with McDaniel's system, but I still don't think he's the reason the Patriots are winning. There is obviously value in a game manager type QB like Mac, but more so when you have a dominant defense, a good OL, a terrific running game, and the 2nd best HC and by extension the 2nd best coaching staff in the history of the NFL.

BTW, I think the Genius - Bill Walsh - would rather have Lawrence and Lance as well, but I know you aren't arguing that. And I still would never think about giving up 3 firsts and a 3rd round pick for him, because I just don't think his ceiling is nearly high enough to justify it, but the Patriots played their cards perfectly, and dang it, that really pisses me off, lol.

I am almost as upset about the Patriots sitting pat and getting a guy who can, at the very least, do his job and manage their offense efficiently, as I was when DK Metcalf fell to the Patriots at #64 overall! The only reason I'm not more upset is because the Patriots aren't in our division, and like I said, I still don't see Mac Jones ever winning a Super Bowl.

      Delete
    22. I obviously meant when DK fell to the SEAHAWKS! Dang that still stings!

Speaking of the Seahawks, you know what else stings (actually, I know you do because we exchanged posts about it at the time) ...

Watching CB DJ REED continue to make plays on the OUTSIDE (RCB) for the Seahawks! I still can't believe the 49ers waived him with a non-football injury designation on August 4th, only to see him on the football field and intercepting the 49ers (Mullens) on November 1st!

Yet another example of poor player evaluation in regards to the medicals, from the GM, all of the way down to the training staff!

    23. Not surprised in the least Jones is playing like he is. He was the most pro ready prospect. Again, 5 years from now and we'll have the metrics to make the comparisons.

On other news looks like ShanaLynch were willing to give up 2 1st rounders and 2nd rounders for Kirk Cousins in 2017. Washington Leadership's reluctance to deal with Shanahan saved the day! Lol!

And, how ironic is it that Cam Newton is already contributing more in the redzone for the Panthers vs the Cardinals, than Trey Lance did last week?

Newton is 3/4 in the redzone with a rushing TD and a passing TD!

I mean, you can't make this stuff up!

How is it that Matt Rule is already doing more, SITUATIONALLY, with CAM NEWTON in the redzone, than Kyle Shanahan was able to do with TREY LANCE against this same team last week?

I realize that different games play out differently situationally, even if it's against the same team, but this is just too much!

    6. Honestly with this regime's track record of trading up for players and missing (like Pettis, Joe Williams, Foster, Hurd), I know they don't place a premium on draft picks and they fall in love with players. Basically, they don't have a sense of a "value-pick".

And Shanahan's love for Cousins is well documented. Any other source than Jay Gruden and I would not believe it. So inclined to think there is be some credibility to this news.

      Delete
    7. "There is absolutely no way in hell Shanny would have given up that for Cousins."

Why are you so sure about that, Razor?

I believe it. Why do I believe it? Because I've already seen the way Kyle falls head over hills for certain prospects, like a school boy crush. And Kyle basically gives away draft picks for prospects whom he thinks can really help his offense in specific ways, and most of these guys are players whom he doesn't even have personal relationships with, right?

And Kyle even admitted that he didn't even bother to scout top of the 2017 QB class (gross malpractice, BTW), because he was so enamored with the idea of trading for Cousins. Not only that, we can be pretty confident that Kyle also knew that the only way he was going to pry Cousins away from Snyder and Allen, would be to make an offer they almost couldn't refuse.

To refresh your memory, here's a quick list of players whom the 49ers traded up for because Kyle was SMITTEN with them:

      - Joe Williams
      - Jaylon Hurd
      - Dante Pettis
      - CJ Beathard
      - Deebo Samuel
      - Brandon Aiyuk
      - Trey Lance

We don't yet know about Lance and Aiyuk, but I think it's safe to say that Kyle overvalued most of these players and gave up too much in order to draft them. Therefore, I have no reason to think that Jay Gruden is wrong about this, all thing considered.

      Delete
    8. OK, Kyle was enamored with the idea of Cousins "becoming available", so that doesn't necessarily mean via trade.

But I still believe Gruden, for whatever that's worth.

      Delete
    9. Gruden? Ha! Dude was going to be a free agent. On what planet would Shanny trade all that capital for him? Makes zero sense. Probably why you believe it.

      Delete
    10. Not to mention, Gruden, who I might add washed out of the league, said, and I quote, I "think" they could've gotten. Garbage!

      Delete
    11. Maybe.

All I know is that it sounds like something Kyle would do. Let's not forget, they gave up a 2nd for Garoppolo, and he was pretty much and unproven QB who was due to be a free agent in short order.

BTW, it's also worth noting that Kyle leaked the fact that he was supposedly "in mourning" about the fact that Kyle would have to give up his dream girl, I mean, dream QB. Who does that and what on green earth is that all about, Razor?

      Delete
    12. And they also gave up 3 firsts and a 3rd for a "developmental" QB prospect, so .....

Slight Edge for the Eagles schedule-wise because they have 2 games against WFT (who will most likely be without Chase Young), 2 games against the Giants, 1 game against the Jets and they play the last game of the season against the Cowboys who might possibly be resting their starters.

Critical games which will decide the 7th seed will be Vikings vs Bears (twice), 49ers vs Vikings/49ers vs Seattle @ Seattle. If we win against Rams, these two will be most critical games of the season. I guess with the hole we have dug ourselves in, every game is a can't lose game from here on.

    2. Run right at him when he plays at right tackle or right DE? He may be rotated all over the line.

    3. Razor, that too...

Mood, the idea here is to work him hard early, whatever it takes is fine with me. I think he is going to be lined up against Moore a lot, till Moore proves himself.

    4. If Donald lines up across from Moore, run behind TW with Juice and Kittle blocking! Then see if he stays
      lined up across from Moore.
