#49ers inactives

Looks like Cannon is up and will be the kick returner.
The postseason is a year away. Win or lose the only thing they're playing for today is pride. Another opportunity to advertise your wo...
Seems many fans have showed up at the Lincoln Financial Field.
ReplyDeleteLet's hope that Kinlaw can make it thru the game.
As Greg Cossell pointed out, Niners would be well served not to let Hurt run north-south -- he's not as good a lateral runner.
Curious how often Niners would use the cheetah front on third downs (all 4 linemen being DE) -- either Bosa as Ford at the edges or even on the same side, and Armstead, Ebukam rushing from the interior. Eagles have a lot of speed on offense, and the Niners' D line have to protect Lenoir and Norman.
49ers OL is being completely overwhelmed atm, and the offense is out of sync as a result. JG has missed some important throws too. Not good.
ReplyDeleteYes, the OL is getting whipped, in large part due to the crowd noise, although this is a very good DL. But yah, Garoppolo couldn't hit the side of a barn from 10 yards out. Embarrassing!
DeleteKyle might be the most stubborn football coach I have ever seen.
DeleteFor crying out loud, just get the football into Deebo's hands! Whatever it takes!
DeleteOne very nice adjustment Kyle has made, more JaMycal Hasty! He is absolutely dynamic in the screen game!
Delete2-0! We'll take that!
DeleteThat was what you call a HARD FOUGHT road victory!
DeleteCan't understand why Kyle has not tested the edges of the D with more outside runs. The O line blocking has been poor, including the vaunted left side.
ReplyDeleteThat clock management at the end of the game was bloody brilliant though!
DeleteWith Graham out I expect things will get easier.
ReplyDeleteGood call on that one.
DeleteGood to hear Nick Bosa's name, finally!
ReplyDeleteI know he gave up a 90 yard reception, but man, bar that play Lenoir has been super impressive in coverage today.
ReplyDeleteThat’s for sure... but is it just me or does Philly have the simplest route tree ever?
DeleteThe whole offense is pretty simple tbh.
DeletePoor Robert Saleh. It probably wasn't his call, but I just don't understand why they didn't stick with Darnold this season to see what they have in him. He was like obviously a victim of a poor team and very poor coaching. If you're on the first year of a rebuild, why not go with the veteran top pick, rather than gamble on another top QB pick, especially an undersized, one year wonder, at QB? SMH
DeleteNew York is going to chew this baby-faced kid up, and spit him out, before he knows what hit him!
DeleteI hope they get Hasty out of there now.. he’s fumble prone and it’s a known issue through camp.
ReplyDeleteAnd I thought sermon would be more sure handed... that’s why I wanted him in.
DeleteHope he’s ok but that isn’t a good look.
That's not on Sermon. He looked like the Trey Sermon I know I the run. It's excusable to lose control of the ball when you get you bell rang like that! That was brutal!
DeleteIn fact, I just don't understand why Sermon is so far down the depth chart. You can see how much yardage he covers with every one of his big, long strides. He has the potential to be the Niners lead running back, no question in my mind about that.
DeleteAnd his fumble today was absolutely excusable. He likely blacked out for a split second, taking that brutal hit!
I don't have a problem when Kyle send a message and benches a player for making mistakes like fumbling. But, as far as I know, Sermon absolutely did not have a problem with ball security in any one of his productive college seasons at the highest levels. And as far as I can tell, Sermon hadn't fumbled as a pro, before getting his head battered and nearly unconscious like he did today.
DeleteIt's when Kyle takes it too far, and ends up destroying a guys confidence. If I am Trey Serman, all I am thinking about right now is don't fumble the football, rather than just relaxing, playing football, and trusting myself. It's like Trey Lance. He was so busy worrying about making one bad decision that he played tight and tentative, and it completely rattled his confidence to even hit a 10 yard slant pass, something he could do in his sleep in college.
This doghouse of Kyle's seems to go a little too far, a little too often, IMO.
But anyways, I digress. This was a gutsy win today, and Kyle and his entire staff, and of course the players, should be very proud of their high-effort victory, and the gritty brand of football they played in today's important win!
After the first QTR today, I really thought the 49ers were in big trouble. They had just about everything going against them:
Delete- The second straight week on the road, in the eastern time zone
- The Eagles were absolutely owning the trench warfare, on both sides of the ball
- The 49ers were dealing with some key injuries, at a number of positions.
- They were facing an extremely mobile QB who seemed to be ascending, and they have struggled mightily to defend against mobile QB's over the last couple seasons
- The Niners were down early
- The crowd was loud, and hostile.
- It was very hot, and especially humid, down on the field.
Seems like Ryans should have had an LB spying Hurts on that last possession.
ReplyDeleteFord let Hurts get the edge almost every time he was out there. Great at getting pressure, but no discipline.
DeleteYeah, I saw that. Maybe Ryans is going to have to take that into account, though, since it is doubtful Ford is going to change at this point. I saw him very close to being offsides a couple of times.
DeleteGood point Razor. On that last long scramble by Hurd you could really see how badly Kinlaw was moving on that gimpy knee. NOT GOOD. I sure hope you are right about his knee procedure, Razor, because he's going to be a bust if that knee doesn't get fixed.
DeleteI meant good point Scooter.
DeleteThat could be a really galvanising win for the 49ers. That was a slugfest. 49ers D gave up some plays in the early going but refused to break and eventually got right on top of the Eagles offense. And after a REALLY slow start the offense found a way to move the ball and get drives going against a really tough Eagles DL. Gutsy win on the road.
ReplyDeleteHUGE win! You hope to have a hard fought win like this one, early in every season. Kind of reminds me of their week 1 road game vs the BUCS to start the 2019, Super Bowl season. Tampa Bay actually out-gained the 49ers, but the Niners fought hard, and got a few critical TO's to pull away with the win. The 49ers won another hard fought game they could have lost, at home, a.couoke weeks later vs the Steelers, another game they had to grind out.
DeleteI am bringing nothing but positives away from this game. I am a happy camper with the way the Niner made halftime adjustments and then finished this game in the 4th QTR!
Today's game was a big man's game! I am very proud of this team's resilience!
And props to Jimmy G. He was woefully off target in the first half, but he joined the rest of the players in grinding this win out.
DeleteJimmy played under control today despite the hostile environment, and he proved once again to be absolutely ELITE at the QB sneak! It was nothing spectacular, but he did what he needed to do to facilitate the win.
I am also glad Kyle didn't bring Trey in under today's circumstances. I am sure he was tempted, but the opportunity to do it never really presented itself, in an obvious way today, so I am glad that Kyle didn't force it!
A nice hard fought win. Eagles' injuries in the trenches was the difference in this game. Not sure if we could have won with Brandon Graham still in. Good comeback from Jimmy G & Kyle Shahnahan after stinking it up early.
ReplyDeleteWe finally have a corner in Lenoir. Kid played real good today. If Mosely comes back, we should be decent in the secondary, with Norman providing good depth.
What is up with Ambry Thomas being inactive?
The pass rush was not disciplined today. Both Arden Key and Dee Ford missing their assignments, but overall very good game from the Defense.
Imagine if they had taken the CB depth seriously this off-season, and drafted a guy like Asante Samuel Jr, like so many of us had advocated?
DeleteBut yes, Lenoir is a baller! But Ambrey Thomas? It's way too early to suggest any rookie is a bust, especially at CB, which is a notoriously tough position to learn. However, you have to wonder how much better this defense would be if ShanaLynch made CB a priority?
Anyways, that's obviously a woulda, coulda, shoulda, situation at this point!
Agree with the other posters. Tough, physical win on the road in hostile surroundings. Intestinal fortitude as a team should be high, and will contribute to the final makeup of the team by seasons end.
ReplyDeleteI thought Jimmy had a good game, not great, but good. Still he missed some passes that you'd like to see completed. However, that completion to Deebo really thread the needle allowing for good YAC. One real positive was no turnovers from Jimmy G. in this hard fought game.
ReplyDeleteIf you're talking about the throw between two defenders, that was his best throw of the day. Like you, I though Jimmy had a good day but he's still sailing throws high and inaccurate.
DeleteWell 9er fans as the old adage goes: it ain't how you start,
ReplyDeletebut how you finish!"
Ten points in the 4th quarter, after 3 hard fought quarters, sealed a win for the 9ers and a return home for game three to meet the GB Packers.
Huge win! However, they better figure out a way to get Trey Sermon and Brandon Aiyuk involved in this offense. I get it Kyle, you've made your point. Now it's time to get your best players involved in your game plan vs GB!
DeletePS: a shout out to Nick Bosa! Even though he's clearly not all the way back from the injury, or even in optimum game shape, but I am so impressed with how hard this guy plays on every snap of the football. It really is inspiring to watch!
Delete49Reasons
Aiyuk looks to finally be getting HEALTHY. Get him some reps and the rest will take care of itself. Sermon will need to clear concussion protocol before KS gets him "involved in the offense."
Two big questions for the 9er coaches before the Packers game. 1) Which RB is healthy enough to start against the Packers? Will Sermon clear concussion protocol, was Mitchell's shoulder injury just a stinger and how serious is Hasty's ankle injury?
2) Will Mosley be healthy enough to start? If not, which CB starts opposite Lenoir? (what a find Lenoir has been).
I agree with you on both point, GEEP. If he passes protocol he better be getting carries ahead of Cannon, that's for sure. Something strange is happening with the way Kyle is handling Sermon, and I find it very troubling for the team.
DeleteI think they need to stick with Josh Norman opposite Lenoir, if Mosley still can't go. Norman's first penalty was very questionable, and while he did have another, the Eagles weren't able to pick on him despite having some decent receivers, so that's a positive sign. Let's hope Mosely makes it back soon.
I just can't say enough about Nick Bosa. A lot guys would be easing themselves in under the same circumstances, but not Nick. He's simply doesn't know how to play at any other speed other than FULL GO, ALL GAS, NO BRAKES! I find Bosa's effort to be very inspiring!
And yah, I know Deebo is playing out of this world, but Kyle needs to get Brandon involved ASAP. Design plays where he's the primary receiver so they can get him going. Even if Kyle has him running some sweeps, and screens, whatever it takes to get this kid going and take a little pressure off of Deebo.
DeleteDid I mention how impressed I am with Bosa? lol
One downer: Javon Kinlaw's knee is clearly a major issue. He is hobbling BIG TIME! I hate to say it, but they might have to consider shutting him down pretty soon.
DeleteConsidering as poorly as the 49ers offense played for most of the first half, this game could have gotten away from the Niners, especially considering it was the 2nd week of back-to-back eastern time zone games. The defense was gassed early, but they ultimately held us, and ended up playing a pretty fantastic game. I thought the first PI on Josh Norman was a very ticky tacky call, so all in all, I thought he was OK.
ReplyDeleteI'm still not convinced that they are able to contain mobile QB's, which could continue to be a problem, but all in all I would give 2 game balls away today. One for DEEBO, and one for the DEFENSE, and an honorable mention to Jimmy G for calming down and playing mistake free football after a shaky first half. The Niners were able to impose their will late, picking up a few crucial rushing first downs.
Wins aren't always pretty, and this team tends to get stronger as the season progresses, so a lot to be happy about heading back to the Bay to take on the Packers!
But they do need to get Aiyuk and Sermon involved starting next week, IMO, and they still need to get their kick return situation figured out. Trenton Cannon cannot be the guy, and he shouldn't be getting carries ahead of Sermon. That's simply perposterous! punt return unit.
I assume you saw that Sermon sustained what appeared to be a serious head injury? I hope I'm wrong. But based on how he ran before the penalty against him, I'm encouraged he can help the ground attack. He looked like he'd been shot out of a cannon.
DeleteAs far as Cannon is concerned, I don't understand why he can't be the guy who returns kicks. They appeared to position him to return short kicks. That is, if the ball was gonna travel over his head, they wanted the touchback. Very reasonable. The reviews say he's electric, which is what you'd want in a kickoff returner.
No, I saw the injury George, I am not sure he's going to be available as soon as next week. But I've watched what this kid can do for years. His speed is deceptive because he has such long strides. Those long strong enable him to chew up yardage, and it also helps his lateral agility in the same way. I am not saying he should necessarily be ahead of Hasty, who looks much improved in year 2, although Sermon is built to handle a load, with Mostert out, I'd like to see Sermon as the featured back, with Hasty as the 3rd down back, and Mitchell as their primary backup because he can kind of do it all. I don't exactly know why Kyle is down on Sermon, but I can assure you it isn't due to a lack of talent or potential.
DeleteAs for Trenton Cannon, he might be a guy who can contribute as a kickoff returner, because he has had some success doing that in 2020, so I won't argue with you too much on that point, other than to say that 10 kickoff returns in 2020 is too small of a sample size to be sure. As a runner/kick returner, he has done absolutely nothing in three seasons, and he failed to make Baltimore's active roster this season, despite their slew of injuries at the position, so I have serious doubts about him as a running back. That he got a carry ahead of Sermon today, was a preposterous situation, as far as I am concerned. That cannot continue!
