Julio Jones when asked if he's going back to the Falcons on Undisputed: "I'm out of there."
He also said he doesn't want to play for the Cowboys.
Sounds as if we won't be seeing Julio down by the Atlanta field anytime soon. He wants to play for a winner. Should we make the move?
What will it take for ShanaLynch to make a move? Falcons eating $5M of the salary (together with $7.5M dead money, that's a post June 1 cap hit of $12.5M for the Falcons) and Niners sending next draft's second round pick?
ReplyDeleteI think I'd make that deal, but I'd offer my 3rd comp + Mostert.
DeleteOh that's right, compensatory picks can now be traded. Yah, I'd do that deal in the heartbeat, Razor.
DeleteMostert seems like a prime trade piece, doesn't he. He's only 15 months removed from breaking postseason records in spactacular fashion, so his value has never been higher, even if he is a RB.
Unfortunately, I'm afraid it's probably going to take a lot more than that though, because there will be a handful of teams trying to outbid the others.
But ... bottom line, I think the Niners need to be major players in the Jones sweepstakes.
And it won't be long now till the Niners are rolling with a starting QB on a rookie contract!
DeleteThat's a game changer!
I imagine the 49ers are very interested. The problem is definitely going to come down to what the 49ers can offer and how they fit him under the cap.
ReplyDeleteTeam already is without 1st rounders for the next two drafts. Can they field a trade package that is enough to entice the Falcons, and if so, what draft capital will they be left with for next year?
And while his salary is quite reasonable for a top WR... the team would need to make corresponding moves to get him within the cap. The obvious candidate to free up money if Jimmy G, but very much sounds like they don't want to go down that route. And I don't see how the Falcons would be interested in eating any more of the cap hit for trading him without some decent draft capital in return.
I can't imagine the Falcons would trade him to any team that's not outside of their conference.

Dede Westbrook (ACL) is expecting 2b fully cleared to participate in football activities by the 8-month mark, per source. He incurred the injury Oct. 25th last season, had surgery in Nov. There's been preliminary communication b/w Westbrook & the #49ers not too long ago as well.
49ers appear to be interested in any WR with a pulse atm.
DeleteIt's shaping up to be one bloody hell of a training camp. Looking forward to camp reports.
DeleteWhen contemplating trading for 32 Y/O Julio Jones, keep in mind that Due to salary cap restrictions, Jones is set for a dead cap hit of $23.25 million if traded before June 1st. If Atlanta trades him after June 1st the dead cap would then be $7.75 million in 2021 and $15.5 million in 2022.
ReplyDeleteThere's also the matter of his $15.3 Mil salary for 2021, plus a $5 Mil signing bonus. Jones left hamstring was injured for September, October, November and December of the 2020 season, Is he still worth $15,3 Mil? Is he willing to renegotiate his contract? Is Atlanta willing to pick up part of his 2021 salary and what will Atlanta demand in 2022 draft picks for Jones?
The one big thing Atlanta has going to it, is there will be multiple teams bidding for Jones, And a bidding war will likely insure he's paid his $15.3 Mil. Is he really worth
that much?
Without trading Jones, Atlanta does NOT have the salary cap
space to sign their 2021 draft picks!
NOTE: Julio Jones is reported to have said he would like to play with Cam Newton (NE),
On a different note, would the readers and commentors here please consider subscribing to David Lombardi's YouTube Channel? If he can get over a 1000 subscribers then he can stream live from mobile after 49ers practices and games.

DeleteThanks Mood. I’m in.
DeleteGreat, looks like David's within striking distance of hitting the 1K #.

ReplyDeleteDon't get me wrong I would love to get Julio on this team and I would be willing to trade for him but I am not sure they can afford to give up many draft picks.
ReplyDeleteSF is in a position where they need to try and get more draft picks because they are going to need some cheap replacements going forward... and getting Julio would only exacerbate that situation.
The players I would want to unload most would be Arik Armstead or Jimmie Ward but I am not sure you could get much for him given their production vs his cap number. Additionally moving one of these players would likely be seen as an admission that they screwed up in trading Buckner.
Offer them Deebo for Julio and a third round pick.
ReplyDeleteToo much draft capital and too much cash for an older injured player. I say a hard no.
ReplyDeleteInjury has been a Jones anomaly. I think Julio has a lot left in the tank.
DeleteBoy, David Lombardi has some nice videos on his channel. Thanks, Mood.
ReplyDeleteHas a nice insight into Thomas, the Michigan CB. Looks like a good one. Lombardi very impressive. Knows so much.
You're welcome, George. Yes, Lombardi's well-informed, smart, thinks and writes clearly.
