Live updates from day 2 of the 2021 NFL Draft & open thread

Welcome to day 2 of the 2021 NFL draft! I will be your host this evening for 2nd and 3rd round action. So far this has been the craziest lead up to a 49ers draft I can remember, but thanks to breaking out my lucky mug, the 49ers were able to avoid a catastrophic meltdown of epic proportions by the faithful after ending the suspense with their selection of Trey Lance. A+ decision. I jumped the shark a little bit on Shanny, and I stand corrected. With that said, let's get this party started!

It would not surprise me to see the 49ers move around some in these 2 rounds. Let's take a look at the next 12 best left on the board:

  1. Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB, Norte Dame
  2. Azeez Ojulari, Edge, Georgia
  3. Teven Jenkins, OT, Oklahoma State
  4. Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU
  5. Elijah Moore, WR, Ole Miss
  6. Rondale Moore, WR, Purdue
  7. Javonte Williams, RB, North Carolina
  8. Creed Humphrey, C, Oklahoma
  9. Baron Browning, LB, Ohio State
  10. Asante Samuel, CB, Florida State
  11. Carlos Basham, Edge, Wake Forest
  12. Jevon Holland, S, Oregon
I will try and provide live updates involving the 49ers mostly, and as always welcome you to participate with any thoughts you'd like to share as we watch together. I would be remiss without a shout out to Scooter for an excellent job yesterday covering the 1st round action. Here's to a great day 2 everyone!

Live Blog

3:08est: Firing up the grill. Bbq baby back ribs, steak fries, homemade mac-n-cheese, peanut buster parfait's

3:35: Keep an eye on Chris Dalman, C, Stanford as word on the street is the Rams are targeting him today.

“Honestly, I’m not really worried about it right now,” Lance said. “Right now. I’m just focused on getting there, learning as much as I possibly can. Getting to know Jimmy and the guys in the room and learning. Getting to know him, becoming close with him and like I said, just learning as much as I can. Then at that point, obviously competing.”

5:57: Expect a run on OT's early in round 2.

6:05: 49ers were at the altar with Jones before running off for a shotgun marriage with Lance, according to Schefter. His psychological test scores were the best of all quarterbacks.

6:44: 49ers expected to take a slot wr early, and target a center in round 3

7:02: Here we go! The commissioner is ready to open the 2nd round.

7:11: The Jaguars are on the clock.

7:27: Broncos trade up.

7:40: Patriots have traded up with the Bengals.

7:44: Bears have traded up with the Panthers.

8:17: 49ers select Aaron Banks, OG, The Golden Domers Of Notre Dame!
Overview-Zierlein
Mass of humanity who's able to cast his frame upon opponents and win with pure size at times. Banks can get a little lax with certain elements of technique and footwork but tends to counter that with his frame and strength. His core and base are rock-steady, as he's rarely jostled by contact. He can create momentum with his size as a run blocker, but he's not a great bender and lacks explosiveness into contact. Pass protection will get a little choppy against athletic interior rushers and twist games that force him to make quick slides to cut off his edges, but he has the anchor to stall bull rushers all day long. Banks has some physical limitations but should be fine as a potential early starter and Day 2 (Rounds 2-3) pick for a physical running game.

Trades trades and more trades. The #49ers trade back, the #Raiders trade up to No. 43. Meanwhile, the #Lions took DL Levi Onwuzurikie at no. 41. SF trades pick No. 43 and a 7th-round pick to Las Vegas for No. 48 and a fourth-round pick (121).

9:26: Round 3 is underway!

10:30: Best of what's left board:

CB Ifeatu Melifonwu Edge Ronnie Perkins OT James Hudson G Deonte Brown OT Dan Moore CB Elijah Molden C Quinn Meinerz G Trey Smith DT Daviyon Nixon LB Jabril Cox OT Spencer Brown CB Shaun Wade DT Marvin Wilson

10:50: 49ers trade up for a RB! Trey Sermon.
11:33: 49ers make their 3rd pick of the day and select Ambry Thomas outta Michigan. Didn't play last year but he was a cb I liked. Should provide some good depth, and come in handy during this season.

Well that about wraps it up for today. I thought the 49ers addressed areas of concern on the team with some really good prospects. Let's put a bow on it:

Trey Lance QB
Aaron Banks RG
Trey Sermon RB
Ambry Thomas CB

I'll see you tomorrow around Noon for the start of day 3. Until then, goodnight fellow 49ers fans!

  1. Hello Faithful, and HALALUJAH - God is good! I say that as a person who isn't even religious in a traditional sense.

Anyhow, I don't have time to get into everything, and boy do I have things to say. Unfortunaterly, my cell phone is broken, though I do have a new one in route via overnight shipping, so I am using my PC, but I'll be on the road until later this even, so I'll have to get back to you all later.

I do have to say one last thing before I head back out .... Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch have now put distance between themslves, and the other tp GM/HC duos in the NFL, which is truly remarkable considering neither one of them had prior experience at their respective positions, prior to being hired on by Jed York. The synergistic way in which they work as a team is absolutely remarkable! And a quick shout out to Jed York as well, who has grown up exponentially as an owner/CEO, over the last decade.

All be back later guys, but I wanted to say thanks for baring with me over the last week weeks.

    GO NINERS!

    2. 49R,
Glad all is well bud. I thought that you were speaking/writing in code for a minute.
Can’t wait to see our shiny new sports car - Trey Lance in action.
Hope we hit some home runs today.

  3. Thanks again, Razor. This platform's a gem.

Let's see what happens today and tomorrow. The FO's manuevers in free agency seem to have been a step above, as if there's a new driver behind the curtain. Maybe the departure of Mahew and someone else stepping into his shoes? Maybe they're just getting better at it? Dunno, but it they knock the ball out of the park today and tomorrow, League watch out.

    2. Thanks, George. If the team can catch some luck in the health division, they should be quite formidable.

    3. This front office has done a good job finding at least one pro bowl/ all pro calibre player each year, as well as some other decent players. I expect nothing less than the same again this year. And here's hoping one of those pro bowl/ all pro calibre players is Lance.

  4. Time to draft a quality center to go along with the new toy.

  5. Thanks razor, I had a lot of fun running the live blog yesterday. I think the vast majority of 49er fans breathed a sigh of relief and joy when the Lance pick was announced! The front office played the mainstream media very well.

I'm in agreement with what Old Coach said in the previous thread - today the team should go BPA out of CB, WR, pass rusher and OL. But as Mood said, I could definitely see the team moving around a bit.

If Elijah Moore is there at #43 and the 49ers take him... that would be awesome. But I think I would be even more excited if somehow Teven Jenkins or Creed Humphrey were there for the taking.

My top CB options would be Asante Samuel and Tyson Campbell.

At edge... if Ojulari is there at 43 he'd be interesting, but there is something about him that gives me pause. I'd almost be tempted to wait and look at guys like Quincy Roche or Patrick Jones instead.

    1. Seems Ojulari had the medical red flags instead of Phillips.

    2. Sure seems like it. A bit surprising that in the mad rush for edge guys at the end of round 1 he wasn't one of the guys taken.

      Delete
    3. Humphrey at 43
Jones at 102, fingers crossed that he is still there.

      Delete
  6. I think national media will continue to push the angle it was Jones the team initially wanted, but I actually believe Shanahan and Lynch when they say they really liked Lance all along... but they also felt comfortable with Jones.

    1. I'm grateful Lance had great parents and the desire to be great at the quarterback position, and was able to impress Shanny in a year when teams had to scout with one hand tied behind their backs.

      Delete
    2. Same. I truly believe Jones would have been very good in this offense. I also truly believe Lance could be special in this offense.

And I don't mean to throw shade on Fields either. I think he'd have been very good too. But I don't think that is the type of QB Shanahan was really after (I likened him to Deshaun Watson previously, and I'm sticking with that).

      Delete
    3. I see Schefter is also saying the 49ers felt Lance was more ready to start right now than Jones. Not sure I fully agree, but it's pretty close. Never been on the train of thought that Lance needs a year of sitting.

      Delete
    4. Should be a great training camp. I take Jimmy's silence to indicate he's at the farm house from Rocky IV training his ass off.

      Delete
    5. I love that Jimmy G got Lance's contact details immediately to welcome him to the team. A+ leadership from the 49ers team captain, despite knowing Lance is his replacement. I was worried about keeping Jimmy on the roster, but I'm not anymore after hearing about that.

      Delete
    6. That's a pro's pro move by Jimmy.

  7. Al Sacco tweeted, using info from @NFL345:

"Lance is the 6th QB from a non-FBS school to be drafted in the 1st round since 1979. The others were: Carson Wentz (2016), Joe Flacco (2008), Steve McNair (1995), Ken O'Brien (1983) and Phil Simms (1979)."

    Not a bad list.

  8. A slot WR and centre on Day 2 makes a lot of sense to me. Put the infrastructure in place around Lance.

My sneaky potential surprise picks would be a RB or TE somewhere in there today.

    3. Scooter,
Niners have only 160 or so draft-worthy prospects this year. They might indeed trade for a pick for next season at some point.

      Delete
    4. I think they will. They don't have the roster spots imo for 9 draft picks.

    5. Great, that trade down gave me time to grab a lager and some hot falafel...

  14. I see we fleeced the Raiders...

Great pick, given the type of individuals who are available at 48. Elijah Molden at slot corner, Ojulari and Carlos Basham at edge. Asante Samuel Jr. at corner. Terence Marshall at Wide Receiver...

    Like it.

    2. Well, Niners have the right guard the fans wanted.

    3. I'll be honest cubus, I didn't think so. He seems more a power/ gap scheme guy to me. But he is a good player.

      Delete
  18. Brunskill and McKivitz have their hands full with Banks. I expect him to be the starting RG day 1.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Same. I thought they would take someone that could eventually move to centre, but this is a good move to really solidify that last remaining weak spot on the OL, and make that run blocking unit lethal.

    2. He takes pride in burying people too. He'll bring a nasty attitude which should rub off on McGlinchey.

      Delete
  19. Well, looks like Shanahan has finally accepted that OGs matter!

    ReplyDelete
  20. Interesting. Solid guard, but not necessarily an outside zone running scheme guard. More gap/power scheme. I had mocked Wyatt Davis about a month ago, who I thought was more compatible to the Niners' scheme. The fact I mocked a Guard in the second round means I like the attention to the interior offensive line, but not who I thought the Niners would take given their scheme.

  22. Banks is a Clydesdale! Great size and powerful. He could become T. Williams’ eventual hire apparent.
    Solid pick.

    ReplyDelete
  23. So... 49ers starting OL now has 4 former 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder. That's some talent.

    ReplyDelete
  24. There’s a threshold past which above-average athleticism is acceptable on the interior line. I think Banks is beyond that threshold.

    ReplyDelete
  25. So just pick 102 left today unless they package and trade up? Is that correct?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yep and I expect they'll use one of those 4th round picks to move up in round 3.

  27. Dane Brugler:

"STRENGTHS: Massive, big-bodied blocker and tough to get around…relies on his wide base to absorb contact and slow down the momentum of rushers…uses his
length to reset his feet/anchor and keep rushers in front of him…outstanding grip strength to control his man once locked on…skilled at leveraging gaps to execute
combo blocks…able to barrel through defenders and wash down the line…observant eyes to quickly pick up moving targets…experienced at both guard spots and
kicked out to tackle at times when Liam Eichenberg had to leave the field…durable and finished his college career with 31 straight starts.

WEAKNESSES: Upright blocker with high hips and inconsistent knee bend, allowing defenders to get underneath him…average athletic traits with heavy legs/feet…has
the hand movement of an air traffic controller and needs to keep his hands tighter and closer to his chest…tardy in his recoil and reset…will allow his upper half to get
overextended at times…his weight has fluctuated (both up and down) over the years and needs to stay in his comfort zone…underwent foot surgery (June 2019) prior
to his sophomore season, but didn’t miss any time…older prospect and will be a 24-year old NFL rookie.

SUMMARY: A three-year starter at Notre Dame, Banks was a mainstay at left guard in offensive coordinator Tommy Rees’ scheme, also seeing time at left tackle and
right guard. He entered the starting lineup midway through his freshman season and started 31 straight games, finishing his South Bend career as an All-American.
Banks displays the body girth, brute strength and physical attitude to take up space and anchor, making him a hard guy to move. He isn’t the most dynamic athlete
among the offensive line prospects, but he isn’t a slug and has some mobility to his game. Overall, Banks needs to mature his hand placement and body posture to
match up with NFL defenders, but he has the massive size and brawling strength to be a square-dominating blocker and potential starter.
GRADE: 3rd Round (No. 80 overall)"

    3. Was worried about his medicals. Must be good. I felt like they needed to draft one.

      Delete
    4. I actually like this move tbh. Sermon is a real talent. The 49ers are loading up their offense, and it will still focus on being a dominant running game.

I thought they would wait until Day 3, but I was convinced they would add a RB they thought could become the feature back. He's a power runner with the speed and balance to be a home run threat too.

    3. The much-anticipated CB. Dane Brugler:
"Overall, Thomas relies more on his physical nature than seasoned technique, but his athleticism and competitive mentality are strong selling
points. He projects as a bump-and-run NFL corner with starting upside"

      Delete
    4. I saw him as the Williams replacement at NB.

      Delete
  36. All in all, the first two days of the draft imo have given the team their QBOTF on Day 1 (who may be the QB of the present quickly), as well as three guys that have an excellent chance to see a lot of time as rookies.

I really like that the team has gone hard at upgrading the weakest part of their offense this offseason - the interior of the OL. And they clearly want teams to fear the running game, which will help open up the passing game.

Ambry Thomas also provides nice depth/ competition in the secondary. He's a very good athlete with decent size, that has some versatility to play inside or outside. Reminds me a bit of Moseley tbh. Nice ball skills, nice physicality. QBs usually didn't have success throwing against him in college.

    Pretty happy so far.
