With Kubiak calling plays, hopefully Mac Jones continues the good work done so far.
Rookies that I will be paying special attention to - Stout, CJ West, Collins, Valdez, Sigle, Jakob Robinson, Jordan Watkins, Kiner and Bergen.

DeleteThe Niners just signed RB Ke’Shawn Vaughn and waived OL Zack Johnson, per the team.
ReplyDeleteFirst two players on the field for SF were Jake Moody and rookie WR Jordan Watkins. Watkins — in bare feet — seemed to be taking mental reps two and a half hours before the game.

ReplyDeleteReally impressed with the D in the 1st 3 Broncos drives. All 11 flying around the field. Front looking disruptive. Coverage good. Sigle looks a player to me.
ReplyDeleteNice showing from some young players. Siegle, Valdez looked fine. I was looking forward to watching Stout, but he didn't play in the first half.
ReplyDeleteA couple of concerns. The LBs almost disappeared. Worse for me was Burford getting beat on the outside. The young players will make mistakes but Burford should not be getting pushed around.
M. Jones had a very nice first drive, but looked lost after that.
I'd add Moss and Robinson to Sigle and Valdez. Bergen looks like a legit PR too.
DeleteJust a preseason game, but Offense was bad. One thing that became apparent is that, we have a very top heavy team and lack depth.
ReplyDeleteOverall I was impressed by Kiner, Valdez, Sigle, Bergen and Lucas. Kalia Davis, Stone Blanton and Jaylon Mahoney also looked good. Tre Brown might lose his spot to Lucas. Nick Martin was disappointing, though it is still early for him. Jakob Robinson had a game to forget.
Barring catastrophic injuries, we should be a playoff team and will contend for the NFC West.
Lucas and Martin stood out for different reasons. Lucas seemed all over the place and Martin can't tackle. Burford just showed how bad the depth of the OL is.

DeleteEarly for Martin....he is still coming up to game speed. OTOH Gifford made some penetrating plays. He is gonna be the SAM LB to start the season along with Fred and Dee Winters.

Kyle Shanahan simply cannot see the forest through the trees. His decision to cut Tanner Mordecai in order to sign Gus Bradley's kid, Carter Bradley (a decision draped in OBVIOUS nepotism), is a decision that will haunt this roster for the entirety of 2025, and possibly beyond. Do you understand the message this decision sends to the rest of the marginal roster? Mark my words, this season is now DOOMED!

ReplyDeleteYes, the rookies have shown promising signs in camp and most that played tonight showed some flashes, but there is a LOT of improvement needed before they can be relied on for big roles. And unfortunately the team doesn't have a lot of depth, so these guys will be put out there before they are ready... or they will sit behind some pretty average players while they learn.

* IMO, Nick Martin showed why Winters will be the starting
WLB and Burford belongs at OG, not as TW's backup at OT.
* I would also question JL's decision to sign QB Carter Bradley
as it raises questions of nepotism. Bradley completed just six of his 14 passes for just 32 yards and an interception. He finished the game with a horrendous 20.5 passer rating.
Unfortunately, QB Bradley did not have the worst passer rating on the team, as Tanner Mordecai earned an 18.8.
* Fortunately, there were also some players that stood out.
I would second Mugeek9er's post for players that stood out. Kiner, Valdez, Sigle, Bergen and Lucas. Kalia Davis, Stone Blanton and Jaylon Mahoney

ReplyDeleteLooked bad Bradley, Mordecai (is it too late to pick up another QB?) Burford and Pleasants they may need to trade for a OT, Watson nice catch early but his cuts in his patterns are very soft. Martin actually good and bad, he makes great reads but his tackling is horrendous. Morstead he seems to take a one step approach and his punts were all very short tonight is Wishnowski still available?
Coaching is the key and how quickly the young players respond. Next game should provide a timeline for improvement.
ReplyDeleteYes, but I think we can now also say none of the rookies looked like day 1 top line starters. That's not a knock on them btw, that's an unreasonable expectation.
DeleteCoach has said previously the first half of the year will likely be pretty uneven with young guys showing flashes but also making mistakes. As the season progresses, hopefully they get better.
I think after preseason week 1 we can say that is looking like the most likely outcome.

ReplyDeleteAgree. These rookies played their 1st ever NFL game. While some of them did not look sharp a couple of them faird well. They will improve.
My biggest concern and disappointment was Burford. His play threw up some major red flags for me. This harkens back to the draft. Not drafting a higher OL pick may become an issue going forward.
Shanahan stuck up for Burford in his presser. I am concerned Spencer hasn't asserted himself in this camp. Looks like this might be his last year here unless the fire burns brighter.

ReplyDeleteAfter what I saw against Denver, I can't disagree. Thought West in particular had trouble anchoring and got pushed around by doubles, while Collins definitely needs to work on staying low (though thought he played better than West).
I think your 1st and 2nd down group will be Williams/Davis/Elliott/Bosa, while 3rd downs will be Huff/Williams/West/Bosa.

Rookie interior OL Connor Colby and Drew Moss were PFF’s top-rated offensive players Saturday.
ReplyDeleteOn defense, CB Tre Brown, LB Luke Gifford, S Jaylen Mahoney and NCB Chase Lucas all got high marks.
Spencer Burford was expecting an outside chip block here from Jake Tonges, which is why he was seemingly beaten so easily.

Delete49ers route tree is extensive for most NFL teams, but Shanny's is over 100 routes, many with coverage adjustments. That's why rookies struggle consistently getting on the field in his offense.

* Compensation in a player contract can be guaranteed for one, two, all or none of the guarantees. If money in a player contract is protected for skill, cap and injury, that money is fully guaranteed at signing and will be paid to the player. If money is only guaranteed for one or two of the three protections, that money is only partially guaranteed.
