All Purpose LB

Louisiana HC Michael Desormeaux coached LB Jaden Dugger for 2 seasons and here’s his take on the 49ers draft pick: “It’s the versatility. His first year with us he played on the edge. A lot of the teams thought that’s pretty intriguing. He’s 6'5", long arms. He can rush. He’s got good pass rush ability. He’s got that on tape. The thing I like about it is he can play inside backer… He’s got a safety background so in the pass drops, he understands coverage really well. He’s got really fluid hips. He’s really smooth... He gives you the ability to play in multiple fronts, multiple defenses without having to switch personnel.”

Could line him up on the edge in that 5-man front.

  1. 6'5" 242 lbs, with a 4.6 40.
Film shows quick reaction to the ball and intelligence to find the correct gaps to the backfield. Dugger might turn out to be an important piece for Morris's defense.

    1. I wonder if he was one of the pool party players Morris wanted.

  2. He and Cruz have a significant amount of development required. I'd be surprised if Shanahan trusts him on the field outside of STs this season.

    1. Tbh, I think both guys could be more 2 years away than 1 year away from being able to play regularly. Would not be shocked if they are both guys the team tries to get onto the PS this year.

    2. Maybe one gets the traditional phantom injury.

    3. Ah yes, could happen. I hope not though, as that prevents them from practising, even if they are healthy to do so. Getting these guys some scout team reps will help them.

  3. The Browns have added Trent Baalke in a consultant-like capacity, a source tells CBS Sports.

    1. Of course Cleveland would do that. Lol

    2. Did the same thing at Jacksonville and ended up being the GM. He's got an uncanny ability to worm his way to the top like Little Finger from Game of Thrones. I give it 2-3 years, and he'll end up being their GM.

  4. Huh, I just realised Reggie Virgil went to the Cards. LaFleur. Thought he'd be attractive to teams running the Shanahan system.

  5. Nick Wagoner on OL Carver Willis:

“Of all the players the Niners drafted, Carver Willis might be the one with the clearest path to starting as a rookie. Robert Jones, Brett Toth, and Connor Colby are the current candidates for that job, and their experience gives them a head start. But Willis will at least be in the mix. The 49ers would love for Willis to win that role and hold it down for the long haul. Barring that, it seems unlikely Willis would move back outside, but it also wouldn't be the first time the Niners had plans for a tackle to move inside only for circumstances to force him to stay outside.”

Carver Willis was by far my favorite day 3 run blocking offensive lineman in the draft for this scheme.

    1. I'm not as big a fan, but I hope I'm wrong!

    2. I keep hearing Willis might also be a long term option at center, which would make some sense to me the way he plays. Not convinced he has the strength to hold up at OG.

    3. That Brendel extension is gonna hit like crack.🍘

    4. If he gets an extension, highly doubtful it'll come cheap.

    5. Scooter, how much you thinking and how would you like it to be structured?

    6. Well, to start with I wouldn't extend him. He'll be 35 next season. Let him play out this year, and if he plays well then consider re-signing him.

But, I am concerned he might hold in like Jennings did last year. Can't keep telling everyone how good you think a player is yet pay them peanuts without the player thinking he's underpaid. He's the 20th highest paid center, and would be lower if it wasn't for some starters in the league being on rookie contracts.

So wouldn't be surprised if they end up needing to sling him a few extra $M to get him on the practice field come TC. Getting him up to $7M would make him around 11th highest paid, maybe he'd be ok with that.

To get him to sign an extension I think you need to go higher though. Probably closer to at least $10M a year. Which would still only make him 10th highest paid.

Have to start wondering at that point whether he's still good value.

    7. Sounds about right. I think they might balk at $10M APY.

  6. D. Lombardi is predicting that the 49ers will use E. Cruz Jr. as their #3 TE in 13 alignments. A lot like the Dolphins used Daniel Brunskill this past year.

    1. Does he say why it wouldn’t be Dinkins?

    2. He does not say. I surmise that would be because Cruz would be a better pure blocker and he can fill multiple positions

Ground Control To Major Kyle
