3 Keys to 4-1

 Rehiring Robert Saleh.

Signing Mac Jones as QB2.

Switching from Moody to Eddy Pineiro.

Aside from the draft and the starters designated to return, those three moves above have put the 49ers in a position to make one more move: Trade for an upper tier big DE to stand in for Nick Bosa.

The candidates:

Trey Hendrickson 30 yrs old, this year only @ $16M Conditional 3rd

Jaelan Phillips 26 yrs old, this year only @ $13M 5th rounder

Bradley Chubb 29 yrs old, 2 yrs @ $31M 5th rounder

Jean Phillips has a history of injuries that includes a torn Achilles in late 2023 and a torn ACL in late 2024, both of which were season-ending. Other significant injuries include an abdominal muscle strain in September 2023 and a lumbar sprain in the same month. He has a previously history of injuries in college, including a concussion that led to medical retirement before being drafted by the Dolphins.
I don't see JL spending $13 for another IR candidate.

  4. A DE candidate I'd like to see JL / 9er FO try to trade for:
Kayvon Thibodeaux, NY giants. The Giants picked up his 5th year option, so he's signed thru 2026 season.
    * With the additions of Brian Burns and rookie Abdul Carter at edge rusher, Thibodeaux is considered expendable by the Giants.
    * He would replace Bosa and provide insurance if Bosa is slow to recover from ACL next season. Also, a replacement for Bryan Huff if he is gone in 2026.
    * 9ers would get Kayvon Thibodeaux. NY giants would get WR Aiyuk.
Assumes Aiyuk recovers and returns to form in the 2nd half of 2025
    season and playoffs .
    * Aiyuk would provide a veteran WR for Giants young QB Jaxson Dart.

  6. I think they will have to give up more than a 3rd round pick for Hendrickson. If the Bengals keep Hendrickson they will receive a 3rd round comp pick when he signs in the off season. I am hoping the Bengals would accept a 3rd round pick in this years draft as well as a 2nd and maybe a 4th in the 27 draft. I hope the 49ers don't give up any draft capital in this years draft (trading a 3rd this year would be a wash when they get a comp pick back when he leaves in the off season) so they can use all of their picks to rebuild the O line. Does anyone think there would be trade partners for Purdy in the off season? If Jones continues to excel this year he could step in as the starter next year and the 49ers could save on Purdy's salary plus get back some draft capital. Anyone think thats even a possibilty? With the money they save they could trade for Hendrickson (or your D end of choice) then with the money they save they could offer Hendrickson a 2 year extension. Just an idea.

    2. I don' see Purdy going on the market Old Coach. The issue for me was if he was sailing the ball at practice due to his toe, what was Mac's status w the foot/knee? Per Hendrickson, yes, I would make that call...... just depends on what the price is. Do they need size on the end, or speed? I think we have the size, not sure speed........ Personally- I wonder about mixing in more disguised blitzes while dropping an Edge back in Zone... can Beal offer anything? Would have liked to see more Dime coverage for added speed against the Rams.

    3. Coach,
There have been reports that the C'boys are the top landing spot for Hendrickson if the Bengals like a potential deal. Thibodeaux and Phillips are nice options if Trey signs with the Boy's.

      Delete
  7. Worth keeping in mind that if you pick a player up half way through the year, you only pick up the salary share for the remaining games, not the full annual salary.

Hendrickson is cheaper than I realised in $ terms. If you can get him for a 3rd it would definitely be worth considering.

Hadn't realised Phillips was on his 5th year either, so he's a bit more expensive than I had been thinking.

  18. With the NY Giants losing to the Saints today, Giants GM, Joe Schoen, faced with a lost season, may be willing to trade Kayvon Thibodeaux to the 9ers for WR Aiyuk?
    * Both teams have a pressing need that the other can fill, and several factors make this a logical move for both sides, especially with the 2025 NFL trade deadline (Nov 4th), approaching.
    * The Giants' recent suffered a season-ending ACL injury to rookie WR Malik Nabers. A healthy Aiyuk would be an immediate, high-level replacement and give rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart a proven veteran weapon. NY has a surplus of talent at the edge rusher position, with a large contract given to Brian Burns. They also drafted rookie Abdul Carter with the third overall pick in 2025, who can fill Thibodeaux's role. Plus, The Giants may prefer to "sell high" on him now to avoid paying three edge rushers top-tier money.

    * The 9ers recent loss of star DE Nick Bosa for the season due to a torn ACL, leaves a massive void on their defensive line. Thibodeaux is a dynamic, young DE who could help fill Bosa's shoes as the 49ers push for an NFC West title, plus he could replace Huff if he's gone in
    2026.
    * Trading Aiyuk would clear up salary cap space while addressing their greatest need following Bosa's injury.
    * Knowing Giants GM, Joe Schoen's history, they will want to move Thibodeaux for a substantial return. While Aiyuk would satisfy that
requirement, If his recovery time is longer than currently reported, that would complicate the trade.....
    * Worst case: . JL is back to working on a trade for a DE to replace
    Bosa......TBD

    ReplyDelete

    1. If JL can find someone willing to take Aiyuk before he has shown he can return to a high level player, he's a genius. Getting out from having to pay next years option bonus would be very nice indeed.

Would you agree, "IF" Aiyuk passed a physical and was off pup by Nov 4th, a healthy, medically cleared Aiyuk (at the trade deadline), would make the trade less risky for the Giants?

      Delete
    3. If the Giants doctors are fine with how his knee has recovered it could happen. But man, what a risk. The extent of Aiyuk's injury was similar to that of NaVorro Bowman.

The 9ers play the Giants week 9. "IF" Aiyuk passed a
physical by then, there is a chance the trade could happen. If not, then I'd agree it likely won't happen.
      * Should the 9ers beat TB this week, IMO, JL be pressured to replace Bosa, to keep the winning streak alive.
The question is, who will they trade for and what will they be willing to give up to make it happen, if not Aiyuk?
Trey Hendrickson signed a 1 year, $29,000,000 contract with the Bengals for 2025. If we subtract 6 weeks salary paid by the Bengals, that leave ~$18.8 Mil of his salary the 9ers would have to pay. I'm not sure the 9ers would agree to
      spend that much, do you?

      Delete
    5. As razor pointed out, Hendrickson is only getting $16M of that in salary. That's the number that matters for the team acquiring him.

      Delete
    6. Scooter
The $16M for Hendrickson salary (that razor pointed out),
assumes the 9ers acquired him mid season?
Just so I understand: If the 9ers traded for him week 6, that would change the number or weeks the 9ers would have to pay his salary to eleven, or ~$18.7 Mil.? Correct?

      Delete
    7. No GEEP, that's his salary the entire year. The rest of the $30M was a restructure (i.e. signing) bonus. The team acquiring him is only on the hook for the pro-rated component of $16M, based on number of games remaining when they acquire him.

    1. AES,

      IMO Short answer....doghouse.

Guerendo is playing exclusively on ST and not doing a good job of it. He had one touch vs the Rams and had a fumble that the Refs didn't call.

If the same trajectory continues for him, it will just be a matter of time before he is INACTIVE and Jordan James takes his ST snaps.

      Delete
    2. I would ghost him too... he really struggles to see the hole, isnt a hard runner, and more importantly he has some major fumbling issues. Hard to give that kind of player many chances when you are in tight ballgames.

      Delete
  24. AES
My guess is the combination of injuries and addition of Robinson moved Guerendo down the depth chart? He has played on ST, as a
kick returner, so I don't believe he is injured now?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. "They" say he's a poor runner. Slow to see the hole, doesn't hit it after he see's it. Not shifty. Poor pass blocker. I don't remember him being a fumbler. His forward progress was definitely stopped on the kickoff when he lost the ball. It wasn't even close. With all that, I'd like to see him play even if he doesn't replace Robinson. He's had some fine runs around end -- for all his faults, he's so fast he can get there whereas Robinson can't and CMC has been having trouble. And he's an ex-wide receiver and has good hands. Shift him into the slot. He hand some chunk screens last year. We've got no one stretching the field except Piersall

    1. I don’t get the use of the term doghouse. Like this is some sort of physiological problem Kyle has. If a player isn’t performing to Kyle’s standard, he’s not going to play him. That’s all about performance and has nothing to do with Kyle’s personality.

      Delete
    2. The application of the "standard' is a projection of his psychology. Let's say we have Randy Moss in his prime. I'm guessing Kyle would make an exception to his "No block, no rock" mantra for wide receivers and play Moss because Moss was incredible. So his standard wouldn't be absolute, but it sems to be way to inflexible when it comes to utilizing an
average-to-good player's talents even if the player is flawed.

      * Connor Colby I give him a pass. A) He's a rookie playing hurt and filling in as a starter. B) As a rookie, he doesn't have
a 2024 record to compare to.

    6. The OL isn't playing as well as it has in the past, particularly in the run game. PFF stats are just confirming what the eyes tell us. 49ers rank dead last in stuffed run % at over 16% of rushing attempts.

AES previously outlined that Bartch should get his job back when healthy, which I pushed back on saying if Colby plays well he should keep the job. Well, so far Colby is proving he's a rookie. Right now I think he should make way for Bartch when Bartch comes back.

    10. My comment has nothing to do with replacing him. At his best he's perfectly fine as a starter. Just outlining his play has dipped the past couple of weeks, along with the entire OL. They need to work it out.

Batch returning as the starter, when healthy, is the right call. But what if Bartch starts, then gets hurt late in the season?
      * Colby will still struggle as a rookie, opposed to the experience & improvement he should have gained, had he
      remained the starter.
      * The 9er O-line should be better prepared to compete in a playoff game with the experience and improvement Colby gains, ifs he remain the starter?

    13. Yeah, Brendel is far from trash. I was worried heading into the year whether he'd be able to rebound from his knee issues last year, but he seems to be moving well. The unit as a whole just hasn't clicked in the run game yet - hopefully they turn it around starting this week.

    14. I just saw where Jim Harbaugh is benching their center, Bozeman whose also a captain.

    15. The realty of the situation is that the Niners have assigned a salary quota for the OL. The only highly paid position is LT. this unit has played together for a while and that helps them a lot. I believe that once we get some pass catchers healthy and playing, it will help our run game. There is no reason why the run game won’t bounce back once the missing players return to action imo.

      Delete
    16. I hope you're right Felix. It certainly will help, but I also think the OL needs to work itself out as well.

The receivers are usually the ones responsible for second and third level blocks - i.e., springing long runs. So getting Kittle, Aiyuk and JJ back should help in that regard.

But they also need to fix the issue of having one of the lowest yards before contact and highest run stuff %, which is based on blocking at the point of attack. That's OL, TE and FB. Kittle again will help, but he's only one man.

After suffering injuries earlier in his career, he signed with Dallas for $1125000 an played in 15 games without missing a practice. he recorded 5 sacks, 15 total tackles over 15 games. He'd likely be a sub-package pass rusher for the 9ers.

    2. A DE the 9ers should also try to trade for is the Giants DE Chauncey Golston, who had a career year in 2024 with 5.5 sacks. * Golston fits the 9er wide 9, can set the edge against teams that run power and he can move inside on 3rd down and Carl Lawson rotate in as the edge rusher.
      * In 2025 he signed a 3 year $19.5 million contract that includes $12 million guaranteed money, with an AAV of $6.5 million. He will earn $7 million in 2025, with $2.25 million in base salary and a $4.75 million signing bonus. His 2026 salary is $5.25 million.
      * He's expected to be a rotational player behind the Giants' primary edge rushers, Brian Burns and Kayvon Thibodeaux. The Giants' selection of another edge rusher in the 2025 NFL draft further pushes him down the depth chart. Trading him to the 9ers, would give the Giants cap space.

  44. The Ravens traded LB Odafe Oweh to the Chargers for Safety Alohi Gilman. Interesting that this trade was made before the trade deadline. Oweh has not done anything of note so far this season, but he did have 10 QB Sacks last in 2024.
Did the Ravens/Chargers make this possible trade known to the rest of the league or was this an "insider" move between brothers?

  45. Felix: Thanks for the thoughts. Consider Deebo. He runs lazy routes if he's not the primary receiver. He's a poor blocker. Yet last year, Kyle insisted on featuring him even though his WR production was also poor.
Kyle chose to make an exception to his own standards. His decision seemed arbitrary? except for his apparent liking of Deebo. Sure most of Kyle's decisions are based on expected performance, hence as you suggest, his success, but some are not, and they're so headscratching, so similar -- that's the genesis of the "doghouse."
Seems like the guy's got some personal trip going. He's only human.

    1. I think you're searching for Reasons. I don't think there's any great mystery why Guerendo has dropped down the pecking order. CMC has remained healthy, and they brought Thomas in because they wanted a guy behind CMC that has carried the load previously in case CMC got hurt.

Guerendo will likely get his chances as the season progresses and it will be up to him to show he can be reliable.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Williams is primarily playing edge on early downs or short yardage downs (in condensed splits on short yardage) and inside (4i) on later, passing downs. Much like he did in college.

  50. Thanks Razor. After 5 games he has yet to record a sack. Could occasionally moving around the LOS be cause for 0 sacks?

    1. Rushing primarily from the interior will impact on his sack production to some degree. Though I also don't think he has the bend to be a consistent pass rush threat off the edge.

      Delete
    2. Worth noting he is currently 3rd in pressures among rookies. So while no sacks, he's doing a decent job rushing from the interior.

  51. Thanks guys. As long as he continues to grow and be a student of the game there's no doubt he will become a big contributor. I'd like to see some sacks from MW with Bosa out, but they will come.

  53. * As of Thursday, 10/09, Jones was a limited participant for the 2nd day in a row, due to a lingering left knee sprain and a new oblique issue.
    * With BP sidelined with turf toe injury, Jones is on track to make his 4th start of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

It's not all is doom and gloom for the 9ers VS TB. * The 9ers do enjoy an extra rest after the week 5 game on Thursday night and a Dominant passing attack averaging >290 yards per game. TB ranks 20th in passing yards, allowing 218.4 yards per game. * TB's pass defense is vulnerable over the middle, with significant secondary depth issues that Mac should be able to exploit.
      * Matching up with CMC should be a problem for TB's LB and injured secondary.

      * TB starting RB, Bucky Irving, isn't expected to play against the 9ers, as he's dealing with a foot sprain and a shoulder subluxation and expected to miss at least 2 weeks. TB RB
Rachaad White is expected to handle most carries and
      pass-catching duties in Irving's absence.
      * TB's O-line is considered a vulnerability for their Week 6 matchup against the 9ers.
      * OG Cody Mauch suffered a season-ending knee injury and placed on IR in mid-September.
      * OT Luke Goedeke was also placed on IR in mid-September with an aggravated foot injury.
      * OT Tristan, TB All-Pro was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, October 8, as he continues to deal with a knee issue. He missed the first 3 games of the season while recovering from offseason surgery.
      * TB's O-line depth is a concern after losing OG Ben Bredeson to free agency. Rookie C Graham Barton has potential, but has also struggled at times.

      * The keys to the 9ers beating TB will be:
      A) Contain Baker Mayfield, his passing attack and explosive plays to rookie WR Emeka Egbuka.
      B) Holding TB's total offense to < 250 yards. As of week 6, TB has averaged 367 total offensive yards per game, with 256.6 passing yards and 110.4 rushing yards per game.
      C) The 9ers O-line must improve their run blocking and establish a run game that keeps the 9er offense from becoming one dimensional.
      * Win the turnover battle. The 9er D has NOT intercepted a pass this season, an INT against Mayfield could be the difference-maker.

    3. GEEP,
If the 49ers lose against TB, it's nowhere close to doom and gloom, imho.
It's (if they actually do lose) just a game in which a loss would not be a huge surprise for me. As I noted, I hope that I'm wrong. But given the early results that Purdy's turf-toe may cause him to sit out this game, has given me pause as to how long Mac can continue to deliver.

  55. DL Mykel Williams has been double-teamed 50% of the time this season.

The only player in the entire NFL drawing more double teams? Myles Garrett.

    1. Razor,
MW being anywhere near to MG definitely put him in good company. MG does have 5 sacks and believe that Mykel will get his at some which will make him a dual threat.

      Delete
    2. DE is part of DL would be my take.

      Delete
    3. My understanding is that it's out of DEs, not all DL. I saw a graph which shows double team rate with MW at 50%, so assume that is where it is from. But it only compared DEs.

Worth noting MW is actually 4th, not 2nd. Watt and Parsons also doubled more often.

But with MW, have to keep in mind he is primarily rushing as a DT, not DE. And DTs are more commonly doubled, having the center able to help one of the OGs.

Still good that he's tying up blockers, but it's a little bit of a misleading stat.

  56. Sunday's battle will be for first place in the NFC.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Just on MW, I get that since he's listed as a DE a lot of people will look to compare him with typical edge players and want to see typical high end edge production.

But he's more appropriately compared to guys like Arik Armstead, imo. That's the role I see him playing - the role they had for Armstead until he switched more full time to DT. And as MW develops and ages, I could see him also moving primarily to DT later in his career.

Armstead was never a big sack guy, bar that one year in 2019. But he consistently generated pressures from the interior and was excellent against the run.

    Replies
    1. And FWIW, from what I've seen so far from MW, he's going to be better than Armstead. Top tier talent.

  59. John Lynch states 49ers having ‘good' trade talks about Nick Bosa replacement...
    https://sports.yahoo.com/article/john-lynch-states-49ers-having-124652237.html

    * Lynch joined KNBR’s “Murph & Markus” on Thursday morning and shared where things stand for San Francisco after a 4-1 start to the 2025 season.
    * “We’ll see. I’m having a lot of conversations — a lot of good and productive ones,” Lynch said. “It is a premium position, so teams don’t like just letting those guys out the door when they’re good football players. So you have to identify the right guy who’s going to help us. I’ve been very clear: you’re not going to find a player that’s going to go replace Nick Bosa and be as effective as him. That’s really difficult to do. But can you find someone who makes the entirety of our group better? That’s more in line with what we’re looking for.”

    QUESTION FOR THE BLOG:
    * Should the 9ers try to trade for a top DE to replace Bosa, with a salary of $13 to $18 mil per year, including a player on their 53 man roster and a 3rd or 4th Rd draft picks..maybe both?
    * Or should they look for a DE with a salary < $5 mil per year and a
6th or 7th Rd draft pick? possibly a young young player they can groom for the future?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't like the idea of giving up a lot in either draft capital or salary unless they are convinced this is a SB run. And I a just don't think this team is SB calibre right now. So it's still a no for me on a top tier DE, unless they can get them at a low price for some reason.

I think it then comes down to whether you they should go for a 1 year rental to make a run at the playoffs while helping the young guys develop or try and find someone that can help them for a couple of years or more.

1 year rental, probably go for a guy that is somewhat established as a playmaker but won'tbreak the bank. But for a guy you hope might stay a few years, that opens it up a bit to anyone you think has talent to develop in this scheme.

    2. GEEP,

To answer your question...2nd option. Our Defensive theme this year has been "Stop the run" with Younger, Faster, Cheaper talent.

I would also add a 3rd option.... try and get a pass rushing DT so that Bryce Huff, Alfred Collins and Mykel Williams can eat.

The best guy who fits this on the cheap is Arden Key...that's who I will go after.
