In the 49ers' first game without Nick Bosa, their defense had no sacks and no QB hits for the first time in a game since Sept. 20, 2015, against the Steelers.
Sacks: 0
QB hits: 0
QB pressures: 5
5 pressures is their lowest total since last year's blowout loss in Buffalo, which was without Bosa. Without this dude I'm afraid we're SOL fellas.
MIA and SOL! That's a hell of a combination. LOL
ReplyDeleteAgreed.
DeleteYep. The problem this team was always going to face was if they lose some star players to injury. It's why I can't/ couldn't get on board with this team being a real contender - would need a lot of luck.
ReplyDeleteThe good thing out of this is 2025 will give the young players on the roster a lot of opportunity to improve.
When you look at the amount of snaps Bosa took last year (86%), I fear there's a correlation.
DeleteDefinitely a correlation between Bosa playing and overall defensive performance. It's why they drafted the youngsters. Now need them to develop.
DeleteI think moving forward they need to keep Bosa at around 76% of the defensive snaps. 86% is way too much imho.
DeleteWHEN IT RAINS, IT POORS.........
ReplyDeleteAccording to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group, head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that Purdy is dealing with some toe soreness, which began Sunday night.
"He didn’t indicate it to me during the game. Talked to him on phone last night and said it was starting to bother him. But nothing during the game," Shanahan said.

With the loss of Bosa, we will really get to see how good these young guys and who we have to work with.
ReplyDeleteThe problem going forward will be just what will SF have with Bosa and Williams going forward? Those 2 players have massive cap percentages for this team which aren't really easy to be rid of. This means most quality starting level free agents are unattainable not just superstars... so you need a stable of role players and you need to hit in the draft.
I say this because the chances of either of them playing near the same level as in years past is very low... and this year suddenly became more about building for the future... and the Line needs to be addressed on both sides of the ball... again.
For the rest of the season Im hoping to see
1. If Trent and Puni get back to health... what they will look like?
2. What the reciever room with Pearsall, Robinson and potentially Aiyuk will look like.
3. Will Mykell and West be able to provide a passrush?
4. Will Collins and Mykell be able keep the run D solid going forward?
5. Will Purdy be able to return to form this season (will the line allow for that?)
I'm not giving up on the season and am still hoping for a playoff win or 2, but realistically I want to see where this team goes from here.
Despite all this we're still 3-1.
DeleteOn paper this team is inferior to the Rams right now. It'll take one of those crazy games for them to win this one.
Razor
DeleteIf BP's toe is, as reported, hurting him, how will it affect his play? Assuming he does play against the Rams, should he, knowing SoFi stadium has an artificial turf playing surface?
San Francisco GM John Lynch joined KNBR 680’s “Murph & Markus” on Tuesday morning and shared that both QB's BP and WR Pearsall are dealing with toe and knee injuries, respectively, are “questionable” for Thursday’s primetime game against the NFC West division rival Rams.
DeletePurdy's got to play, he's QB1 and can't blame the toe. No excuses!
DeleteIf the injury will get worse by playing him then sit him the next 2 games. If it is just about pain management then play him.
DeleteOldCoach / Razor
DeleteThe problem with "PLAYING HIM," is you won't know if his toe will get worse until after he's played...Then it's too late and likely he'll miss additional games.
If you believe his toe affected his play against the Jaguars, why play him against the Rams at SoFi (on turf) Thursday, with 3
days rest?
There's a strong possibility that the 49ers can lose the next two games against the Rams and the Bucs. But even if that happens, this team still will get better because Kittle and Aiyuk will be back. The rookies and young players like Winters will continue to grow in their positions. Huff and now Demarcus Robinson will bring good value going forward.
ReplyDeleteWith these positives taking place in the next few weeks, the 49ers are still a post season team, imho. And if they can get past either the Rams or the Bucs, they will have the team to make a deep PO run.
I think due to the 4th place schedule they are a shot at making the playoffs. But I think they are a year away from a deep playoff run without a lot of luck.
DeleteAgree, Scooter. Next year is when I believe it all comes together.
DeleteWe've seen plenty of 5-man defensive lines against us. We've got tackles like Kalia Davis and Sebastian Valdez and Kevin Givens (injured reserve) whose strength is their penetration and whose vulnerability is holding their gap -- wouldn't matter so much in a 5-man line and with everyone going no-breaks, might disrupt the opponent's run game, too. A 5-2-4 base sounds good.
ReplyDelete49ers Run Game:
ReplyDeleteKittle on field: 4.9 ypc
No Kittle: 3.3 ypc
Some things don't change -- I recall a similar number discrepancy in Kittle's first three seasons.
DeleteThe good news and the bad news is...
ReplyDeleteThe good news:
* The 9ers’ are 3W - 1L and their last-place schedule! That means their games in the NFC East, NFC North and AFC North are against the N Y Giants, Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns. * The Rams have already lost to the Eagles and still must play the Lions and the Ravens.
The bad news is
* The number of Injuries on both the offense and defense, they can't run the ball and BP's toe is a problem.
* The Jaguars controlled the line of scrimmage in both the running game and giving Lawrence a clean pocket to operate from. That's a major problem for the 49ers' defensive front 7 going forward.
* Their toughest stretch of the schedule is coming up with back to back road games against the Rams in LA and Buccaneers in Tampa Bay.
I believe that they can over come all of their current weaknesses but one. The O line is one of the worst run blocking lines I have ever seen. Their pass blocking is mediocre. I just don't see a unit going from bottom 5 to top 12 in one season.
ReplyDeleteAfter taking a deep breath, I think my conclusion is that we did our best to lose this game. Our offense is not as bad as what we put on tape.
ReplyDeleteThe offense was playing without IQ. All 4 turnovers came on 1st down and Brock was bad but was also clearly hurt. 6 drops didn't do him any favors. The Killer was the KB drop, because the next play they took it to a TD, which was the difference in the game.
I think Pearsall won't play this game and I hope DRob gets more snaps than KB. Since he was being showed out, KB will play his ass off this game.
So I think we will play the Rams close and lose. But we will win against the Bucs after a mini-bye....as long as we don't lose any more starters against the Rams.
Mugeek, agree, they were their own worst enemy vs the Jags. Just had to play a reasonably clean game and they'd have won it. And that's despite the players missing.
DeleteRams and Bucs will be bigger challenges, but 4th place schedule means they still have a decent chance at playoffs if they play disciplined football.
Thing about Rams is that they have a great pass rush/D-line and Safeties. But their LBs and Corners are Meh. And we know that KS always isolates and takes advantage of LBs.
DeleteWith Bucs, they have their own injury problems and struggled to get to 3-0 against 1-8 teams. The one team that they faced with a winning record, they lost. The Bucs game is now flexed to Sunday afternoon from Sunday morning and even though we travel to Tampa, we have a +rest advantage.
So both games are winnable IMO...we'll see how this version of the team handles adversity.
Side note.
ReplyDeleteI keep hearing twitter fans yelling about Brocks contract talking about his 53M aav being the reason they can't sign anyone.
So I looked into it closer.
Over the next 3 years he averages a cap number in the low 20's and his cap% never cracks the top 10 in cap percentage in terms of qbs. After that it Balloons but there is no way he will see that money without a renegotiation. The reason is SF could cut him at a cap hit of 16M and a savings of 40+M cap wise that season and an overall savings of 180+ M.
So once you factor in a replacement qb (figure around 10M) you have space for another basically average starter at 10M per season... not a superstar... OL wise it means someone like Becton, Zeitler or Cam Robinson.
Yeah, the people screaming about Brock's contract don't really understand the salary cap.
DeleteThe cornerstone of the offense is the QB. All the other stones are built around him. Unless Purdy falls over a cliff he is "that guy." Next season the 49ers will need to dip into the draft for Olinemen that can keep the pocket clean and open running lanes. Purdy is still young and good enough to keep around for years.
ReplyDeleteI find it astonishing that an experienced HC like KYLE SHANAHAN would literally set into motion the ingredients to create the perfect storm for a quarterback controversy. How does a HC sign a former first round pick to play backup QB, whom was literally rumored to be his (Kyle's) preferred 2021 QB draft prospect, to begin with? And then how does a HC allow his priced starting QB play hurt, when it's obvious that he is having issues with accuracy because of the toe injury, knowing that if he played poorly and his team lost their first game of the season, after said backup QB had just orchestrated two exciting, back to back wins, with a huge portion of the fanbase believing that Kyle wanted Mac from the get, like I said, setting in motion the ingredients for a perfect storm of a QB controversy? Now whet? Brock is likely at a point now where if he even has a bad first half, after supposedly returning healthy, we all know that a huge portion of the fanbase, as well as the media, are going to turn this into a full blown QB controversy. I
ReplyDeleteThis decision by Kyle was fundamentally one of the most, amateurish decisions I have ever seen from a seasoned HC!
TJ,
DeleteIf Jones continues to play well and BP recovers from his injury KS will look like a genius this coming off season. The value of a quality QB is unlimited. He could set up a bidding war between the two QBs and end up with a boat load of good draft picks and who knows even a quality player or 2. I just hope Jones doesn't get killed tomorrow. Keep Martinez warm. So if that scenario comes true KS will be a genius.
Shanahan had Sam Darnold (1st rd draft pick) as Purdy's backup a couple of years ago.
ReplyDeleteMac was floundering the last few years. Yes, Shanahan liked him coming out of Alabama and it has already proved to be a good signing. Jones is no threat to Brook.
*Brock..
ReplyDeleteHard to see the 49ers beating the Rams with all the guys missing.
ReplyDeleteI see the 49ers picking up their game play after the Bucs game. So even if they come out of the next two games with two loses, they are 3-3 with a lot of football left to play along with getting healthier. The 49ers have yet to hit their stride but it will come.
ReplyDeletePer NN
ReplyDelete"This report listed quarterback Brock Purdy (toe), wide receiver Ricky Pearsall (knee), wide receiver Jauan Jennings (ankle/rib), wide receiver Jordan Watkins (calf) and defensive end Robert Beal Jr. (ankle) as out this week."
This will be a daunting task, but maybe the Rams will be overconfident and the 49ers have some turnovers fall their way.
^Per NW - not NN.
ReplyDeleteWhat would you do on offense? A special teams miracle? If nothing's working after a couple series, I'd run every screen, reverse, flea flicker, hook-and-ladder etc. Tonges and Juice on those leak plays, too. At least it would be fun. Maybe Martinez plays a snap here and there. Don't know about him except for the UFL MVP and he led that league in rushing! Hmm.
ReplyDeleteHere's what's bugged me most about this season -- the personnel decisions like last year with Ronnie Bell and De'Vondre Campbell. This year we've got Guerendo's doghouse and Bourne. There's more but I'm thankful I can't remember them.
OK, I agree with others on the blog, if we ever get healthy, maybe our offense alone can carry us into the playoffs.
So wasn't KS a WR and played for Texas? With all the 9er WR's banged up, maybe he'd like to take a few reps? lol
ReplyDeleteJordan Seaton, OT, Colorado is a player to check out. Excellent pass pro and a work in progress in the run game.
ReplyDeleteRazor
ReplyDeleteCorrect me if I'm wrong, but I believe Seaton is a true Sophomore this season (2025) and not eligible for the 2026 draft? I don't believe he'll be eligible before the 2027 draft?
Despite his ineligibility before the 2027 draft, you are correct! Seaton is considered one of the top OT prospects on the Buffaloes and is expected to be a high-round draft pick.
While the loss of Kittle to the run game is big, the O line's run blocking has been mediocre to sub-par through the first 4 games. I'd have expected Williams to have shed his rust by now but into the fourth game he's been pretty meh by his standards.
ReplyDeleteDL, made a good observation re Trent Williams last Monday. TWs stats are somewhat skewed because he's having to also cover or help rookie Colby. As Colby finds his sea legs at RG, Trent's numbers will improve.
ReplyDeleteTW's dip in play so far this year has very little to do with the guys next to him. He's just been getting beat more often than usual.
DeleteSure, there's been some dip in TWs play. But there may be many factors involved. Of course, we all know that age will eventually catch up with the greatest of athletes. Also, having a rookie next to you can make a difference.
ReplyDeleteI've been saying for the past few years that the 49ers should have given the Oline more attention early in the draft. Now, the 49ers may not have any choice but to draft one or two Olinemen early in the 2026 draft.
I think the injury in week 1 that had him questionable for week 2 is likely having a toll as much as anything else.
DeleteAgree.
