Spencer Burford had a nice snatch-and-trap to neutralize Nik Bonitto’s rush. Just one rep from a preseason game, but Bonitto was a Pro Bowler and Second Team All-Pro selection last season.
Jordan Watkins has High Ankle Sprain...out for a month. Sucks for us.
But I think injury situation is improving overall...knocking on wood.
Sigle, Evan Anderson, Jyir Brown and Bethune are full go at practice. Cowing, Stout expected to practice this week. Dillard off PUP, Green expected next week.
Larger picture... Aiyuk and Malik Mustapha expected around Week 6. Demarcus Robinson appealing 3 game suspension.
As long as no major injuries this week, we should be trending UP!
I wish, hope......and pray that we don't have a Jarett Kingston type situation here with Connor Colby. We released way too many good players last season. Player evaluation was bad.
On a side note, did any of you all watch the Rams preseason game? Cody Schrader was awesome.. I was sickened!
That's right Razor. The point I'm trying to make though is, will we be able to sign Kiner to the PS? Or will a team like the Rams "swoop" him.
The larger point I'm making is on last year's player evaluation.
We cut promising young players like Samuel Womack, Jarett Kingston (who ended up on different teams) and retained players like Ambry Thomas and Ronnie Bell who are no longer on the team. So loss-loss situation.
Question for Razor, Scooter, or anyone on the blog who knows: * With all the players being signed to replace injured players during TC and then released....My question(s) are:
1) My understanding is, they're paid $41,667 per week if there is no Guaranteed Money? Is this correct? 2) Players released before the final 53-man roster cuts will be paid only for the weeks they were on the active roster. 3) Guaranteed Money: My understanding is, this money is only partially guaranteed. Compensation in NFL contracts can only be guaranteed for 3 purposes: A) skill. B) cap and C) injury. Is this correct? * Compensation in a player contract can be guaranteed for one, two, all or none of the guarantees. If money in a player contract is protected for skill, cap and injury, that money is fully guaranteed at signing and will be paid to the player. If money is only guaranteed for one or two of the three protections, that money is only partially guaranteed.
Players do get paid during training camp, but I believe it is a lot less than you outlined. I think max is around $3,500 per week for vet players, less for rookies.
Players salaries get paid in weekly instalments during the season, which doesn't cover camp or pre-season. So if released before the first game, they only get their weekly payments during camp/ pre-season plus any guaranteed money they are due.
I would put Demarcus Robinson and Russell Gage over those FA WRs. Btw, maybe I missed it, but I've not seen a large group here clamoring for Davis and Cooper.
That's probably true AES, but I can't say one way or the other since I recently just here. I just know there is a large clamoring for Davis or Cooper on other social media platforms. I also agree with you that Robinson and Gage are the better way to go.
Robinson is a sneaky good pick up for Brock imho. I think those two will have something going when he returns from suspension which is under appeal right now.
Ben Bartch seemed to hurt his right arm/elbow on a running play early in practice. Rookie Connor Colby took over at LG with the 1s. Nick Zakelj played RG with the 2s, got some C snaps with the 3s.
Hate to say I told you so about Bartch. Dude just can't stay on the field.
Burford's looked good at LT. I'd let him continue to develop and get comfortable there. They got OG's up the butt, but Foerster has struck gold again with Conner Colby.
Burford didn't look good at LT. It wasn't as bad as thought on live watch, but it wasn't good.
But my main point is if Burford has an opportunity to be one of the best 5 OL on the team, and there is one open spot on the OL in which the tentative starter is often injured and he already has experience playing, it boggles my mind they didn't let him compete for the spot.
I thought Burford looked good and they told you before the season even started they no longer viewed Spencer as an OG, so I'm not sure why your mind got boggled.
They've also routinely said they know Burford can play that spot when discussing the LG job.
When I say it boggles my mind I don't mean I am surprised he isn't getting reps there - they outlined the plan. I mean I'm surprised they made that decision in the first place. Unless they think he flat out stinks as an OG.
Well, they've viewed Burford as one of their most gifted OL ever since they drafted him. I do find it interesting that a couple years ago when asked, Foerster said he thought Spencer was an OG only. Maybe he just changed his mind with his opportunities last year knowing Moore would likely be leaving in F/A.
With Cowing closer to getting on the field and Russell Gage along with a nice showing from Watkins last Saturday, Jennings might be a little motivated to accelerate a new deal. Also, if the NFL gives D. Robinson a lower suspension (less than 3 games), perhaps it could also light a fire under JJ.
Unlike most, I have high hopes for Burford as a Tackle.
The Head Coach does not give excuses for a player, unless they know that there is something promising.
If Jaylon Moore can play Tackle in Kansas City, I'm sure Burford can be serviceable too....and the best men who can make that call are Foerster and Shanahan. So I trust the process....lets see if it pans out.
Razor - I just watched some Lombardi, and he also suggested Moss has the body to play center. My feeling is to get younger and better on the OL. Sounding like Colby and Moss are going to eventually fill starting rolls which is. Lombardi also described both of them as road graders...that's an attitude thing and I love it. Also he noted Puni has played all five OL positions...
About Burford and his playing OT, I remember watching a video maybe two years ago of Foerster being demonstrative in saying that Burford was definitely not a tackle.
49ers host 4 wide receivers after Jordan Watkins’ injury: Judging by the names, 49ers WR Jordan Watkins’ injury isn’t severe, and the team is happy with its depth/core at WR
* San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan didn’t sound like somebody looking to spend big on a veteran free agent wide receiver, like Amari Cooper, for example, when speaking to the media on Monday. A move like that would happen if the 49ers felt like Jordan Watkins’ high-ankle sprain would last longer than they initially thought. * Per the transaction wire, the 49ers had tryouts with four wideouts Tuesday afternoon, and none of them are to be confused with a player of Cooper’s status: Jalen Camp Frank Darby Kwamie Lassiter Malik Turner https://www.ninersnation.com/san-francisco-49ers-injuries/149011/49ers-host-4-wide-receivers-after-jordan-watkins-injury
9ers waive QB Tanner Mordecai: * On Monday after the game, the 9ers waived Mordecai (for the 2nd time) in order to make room for RB Jeff Wilson Jr. off the free-agent list and to activate OT Andre Dillard. * The 49ers also placed running back Ameer Abdullah (ribs) on season-ending injured reserve.
GEEP, I was surprised by Tanner' poor performance last Saturday given that he was on the PS in 2024. I could understand poor play due to off-season rust, but Tanner regressed and looked completely lost and confused.
AES Yea, Bradley didn't have the worst passer rating on the team, as Tanner Mordecai earned an 18.8. * Bradley completed just six of his 14 passes for just 32 yards and an interception. He finished the game with a horrendous 20.5 passer rating.
GEEP, Both QBs were turrable (Charles Barkley). But Bradley received a soft landing because he joined the 49ers earlier in the week. Bradley will need to do a much job this Saturday or he to might be gone the following day. As I said earlier, it wouldn't surprised me to see a return of Tanner.
At this injury rate, the 49ers may need to join a Flag Football league. On the (hopefully) bright side the Oline coaches will need to accelerate the development of Colby and Moss. I expect to see these rookies make good contributions this season and beyond.

Bartch has yet to prove he can stay on the field. Colby will get his opportunity at some point this season.
DeleteMugeek9er, Kiner looks pretty damn good too.
DeleteI'd really like to see Colby become "that guy" sooner than later which could be this season.

Tks Scooter
ReplyDelete$3.5K p/w seems more reasonable than $41,667.
Armand Membou went up against the Packers starters and looked like a seasoned vet. 👀
ReplyDeleteDrew Moss was the 2nd highest graded offensive player Vs Broncos, per PFF.
ReplyDeleteFor everyone wanting the 49ers to sign Gabe Davis:
ReplyDeleteCareer catch rate: 53.7%
For everyone wanting the 49ers to sign Amari Cooper:

recently just returned here

ReplyDeleteThanks again. It feels good to be back.

It's also why I don't understand not letting Burford be part of the competition for LG.

DeleteBartch's situation is starting to have similarities to what made Puni a starter last year. Maybe it will be the same for Colby this year.
ReplyDeleteTBD
Almost feels like they'd prefer Colby win that LG job and have Bartch off the bench, similar to the way they did Brunskill with Burford.
DeleteLooks like Jauan Jennings and the 49ers are nowhere close to a deal.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they'll pay him unless it's something like what they did for Mostert when he threw his tantrum.
DeleteI'd be surprised even then Razor. I love Jennings and what he brings to the field, but I just don't see him getting a new deal with the 49ers.
DeleteIf memory serves me, Mostert didn't get a new deal per se, he just got a raise for the year.
DeleteThat'd be correct Razor. However, I don't think Jennings will even get that.
DeleteWith Cowing closer to getting on the field and Russell Gage along with a nice showing from Watkins last Saturday, Jennings might be a little motivated to accelerate a new deal. Also, if the NFL gives D. Robinson a lower suspension (less than 3 games), perhaps it could also light a fire under JJ.
ReplyDeleteI think Robinson could account for up to 6 TD's this year.
DeleteRookie Starters:
ReplyDeleteEDGE Mykel Williams
NB Upton Stout
FS Marques Sigle
KR/PR Junior Bergen
Depth/Rotation:
DT Alfred Collins
DT CJ West
WR Jordan Watkins
RB Jordan James
C Drew Moss
LG Connor Colby
Project:
LB Nick Martin
Looks like Warner/Winters/Bethune are your starting LB's.
I think starters at LB will be Warner/Winters/Gifford.
DeleteMaybe after the bye Bethune will claim it.
Well I just saw some film on Drew Moss, is there any chance Puni could play LT and play it well? If so Moss and Colby would be my guards.
ReplyDeleteThat's a big move. Arms are shorter side for a tackle.
DeleteI like Moss at center. Zakelj looks like the odd man out after last weeks tape.
DeleteI suspect Dillard might be the new RT next year....provided he proves himself as the swing tackle this year.
DeleteMcKivitz will leave in FA.
We will spend a top 50 draft pick on Tackle next year while hoping that Trent Williams has a couple more good years in him.
Yep and Trent just said he has 3 years left in his body.
DeleteUnlike most, I have high hopes for Burford as a Tackle.
DeleteThe Head Coach does not give excuses for a player, unless they know that there is something promising.

DeleteSounds good Under! I too trust the process and am thankful we have Foerster in charge.
DeleteAbout Burford and his playing OT, I remember watching a video maybe two years ago of Foerster being demonstrative in saying that Burford was definitely not a tackle.
DeleteYeah, they seem to be changing tune on Burford for some reason. I do actually wonder if it is player led.
DeleteNot sure what the motive would be to change his tune if it weren't player earned.

AES,
DeleteI think at least for Tanner, the missing piece is Brian Griese.
I remember Griese was the one who was instrumental in adding Mordecai to the QB room. So maybe he doesn't resonate as much with the new staff.
Mugeek9er
DeleteAgree with you on Griese was instrumental in adding Mordecai to the QB room.
Good point, Mug. Somehow, I wouldn't be surprised if Tanner finds himself back on the 49ers PS. Stranger things have happened.

DE Bradlee Anae goes on injured reserve. Could be one of those "phantom" injuries to avoid losing him.
ReplyDeleteAnother player that needs to play much better come Saturday is Nick Martin.
ReplyDeleteAnother rough showing will likely bury him deep on the roster.
"I’m taking it on the chin… there were a few plays I wish I could have back," "That’s life, learn from it and capitalize next time."
Nick Martin...
Hopefully, Martin can make everyone forget his Denver game. But, for now, I like his attitude.
This is a breakdown of Drew Moss' excellent game against Denver. Looks terrific. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVUKwWCSB2s
