Blindside Protection

The 49ers are making their stance clear on Trent Williams: San Francisco is willing to guarantee roughly $36M over the next two years — including about $24M in 2026, per Jason LaCanfora. Sounds like a marriage commitment to me for Brock Purdy’s blindside. Likely guarantees OL is off the table at 27.

  1. When the 49ers bring in five or more players at the same position, (WR) for 30 visits, you can bet your last dollar that they're drafting one.

    1. Definitely. Would be shocked if they don't add a WR in the draft.

      Question then becomes - when?

Still not convinced it will be round 1.

    2. I think it's all dependent on who's left on the board at 27.

    3. Oh definitely. But I still think they are leaning DL over WR at 27, if they have their choice of guys.

    4. DL as in big DE like Parker which would fall in line with prior philosophy, more of a DPR like Lawrence which would be a departure of prior philosophy or iDL of which they already added two last draft?

    5. I keep vacillating between edge/ olb type and iDL. To me, both are needs, even though they drafted 2 iDL last year and traded for Osa.

I think if they had their choice of realistic options at 27, edge/ olb would be the pick.

Also, I don't think they'll go a DPR as such. Whoever they take at edge I think they'll want them to be able to play as a stand up OLB/ DE in a 5-man front, which means an ability to also go out and cover the flat sometimes.

    6. I would think Parker or Howell would be two they'd likely have strong interest in at 27.

    7. Both of those would make a lot of sense.

One sneaky guy I've mentioned before and am not ready to quit on is Anthony Hill Jr. Not a true edge player, but a good blitzer that has the size and athletic traits to play the on ball SAM and backup Greenlaw at WILL.

    8. You like him in that role better than Jalon Walker?

    9. I would prefer Walker over Hill, but that's exactly the type of role I'm picturing.

    1. I started with Concepcion back in early February and that's who I keep coming back to. From the beginning I thought he'd be at the top of Shanahan's list.

  3. On the docket for the NFL draft this week:

Wednesday: the final day for teams to host prospects on pre-draft 30 visits

Also Wednesday: Georgia LB CJ Allen will run a 40-yard dash

Friday: Arizona State WR Jordyn Tyson will do a positional drills workout

  4. The most explosive target is KC. The most easiest target (to hit) is Boston because of his size. Cooper offers a little bit of both, but he may be gone before 27.
It's a tough call for me, but I lean a little more on KC.

  5. John Chapman's 2026 draft crushes, video link below.

    His favorite receiver: Skyler Bell

    1. Bell is something of a polarising prospect. Some people love him, some don't like him much at all - pretty wide variance.

Brazzell is a bit the same.

Going to be interesting to see where some of these guys go.

  6. Brazzell is a bit of an enigma for me. Among the many noted WRs that have been mentioned here, he falls under the boom or bust category for me. His length and weight gives me pause.

  7. DeaMonte "Chip" Trayanum is a back the Niners should have interest in as an UDFA.

  8. Delby Lemieux Dartmouth is another UDFA they should have interest in.

  9. The 49ers hosted Missouri DT Chris McClellan on a Top-30 visit.

  10. The 49ers are hosting OT Caleb Lomu on a visit today 👀

  11. Could this have something to do with the 49ers/TW negotiations? Perhaps Williams and his agent are not happy with the FO terms. Maybe it's just coincidence, but the timing of the meeting with Lomu does raise questions.

    1. To me Lomu is the only true LT in the draft, but I don't expect him to make it to 27.

    2. I'm not a fan of Lomu, but I get why he'll be a first rounder. Ssme with Freeling, Miller and Iheanachor. There's only so many dudes that have that sort of athleticism at that sort of size.

Personally I'd take Iheanachor over Lomu and bet on the upside.

But like razor, I think these guys will go quick. 49ers might not get a shot at any of them.

  12. Maybe I'm old and have this tendency to be suspicious a lot more these days then I should. Another draftnik put out his mock draft yesterday and had the 49ers going with Lomu with 27. He is just one of many mock draft talking heads that have Lomu at 27.
That's the reason why I mentioned the timing (with the TW/49ers negotiations) of Lomu's visit.

  13. The Steelers have given A. Rodgers an ultimatum. Sign before the draft or goodbye. If Rodgers doesn't sign is there a chance that the Steelers might trade their 1st round pick and Mason Rudolph for Mac Jones and Aiyuk?

  14. First-round "locks" among O-linemen, based on what I've heard: Francis Mauigoa, Spencer Fano, Kadyn Proctor, Monroe Freeling, Olaivavega Ioane.

    Likely first-rounders: Max Iheanachor.

Fringe first-rounders: Blake Miller, Caleb Lomu, Emmanuel Pregnon, Keylan Rutledge.

  15. I like Blake Miller and Iheanachor. Miller is more polished. But, Iheanachor has a higher ceiling when considering his late football start.

Lomu is a little of bit of both these players. He was somewhat overshadowed by his teammate Fano, but many Lomu was not too far behind.

  16. When looking at the WR's in this draft I think it's imperative to focus on the ones who will get after it as a run blocker in an outside zone scheme.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I agree. Blocking in Shanahan's OS is a must for a WR.

Shifting a bit, how many TE's do you believe the 49ers will have this year?

    1. Kittle, Farrell and Tonges are pretty much locks. I doubt they carry more than that unless Kittle isn't ready. Might be a position for an UDFA rather than a draft pick but who knows?

  18. Quarters rates have become stagnant across the NFL as more teams adopt Fangio-like rotations (8/Stuff) and play Weak Rotation Cover 3 from a 2-High shell. Consistently stops 12p 2x2 formations.

  19. Niners got 17 spots available on the 90-man roster. 6, at the very least, will be draft picks. That leaves 11 available for undrafted free agents, depending on whether they sign more vet free agents.

  20. Draftable RB's:

    1) Jeremiyah Love
    2) Jonah Coleman
    3) Jadarian Price
    4) Kaytron Allen
    5) Mike Washington Jr.
    6) Eli Heidenreich
    7) Emmett Johnson
    8) Demond Claiborne
    9) Le’Veon Moss
    10) Nicholas Singleton
    HM) Seth McGowan

  22. Seems like Round 4 is where they target a Safety.

  23. Seems like Round 4 is another target for iDL. That leaves two 4th Rounders left for what 2 positions?

  24. Tristan Leigh OT Clemson should be on the UDFA list.

  25. One of the questions Todd McShay's been asked the most by teams when talking to them is "where do you see Malachi Lawrence going". Lots of buzz around him from teams. Said he'll go a lot higher than people are thinking even now.
