Brandon Thorn, who is well known as being a good OL evaluator, has only one OT with s first round grade this year (Fano). His second rated OT is Proctor, who he gives a 2nd round grade on, with a similar grade he had on Conerly and Guyton in recent drafts.
Next guy is Miller, who he compares to McKivitz as a solid OT, followed by Freeling who he sees as boom or bust that should be allowed to sit and learn or start out at OG while he develops. Compares him to Kolton Miller.
Lomu is his 5th guy but he is very concerned about his play strength and thought his technique needs work. Compared him to Walker Little.
Iheanachor is his 6th guy. Rawness in technique and spatial awareness were his biggest concern. Too many lapses currently. Has a 3rd round grade on him.
Sees Mauigoa as an OG that can be a solid OT if kept there.
He does acknowledge a lot of them will go round 1, because OTs with starting early potential get drafted early. But not a good OT group overall.
He prefers the OG group. Sees 4-5 guys ready to start right away, that will be above average to very good starters. Ranks them as Ioane and Muaigoa (round 1 grades), then Bisontis, Pregnon and Rutledge (round 2 grades), then Dunker (round 3). Thinks all 6 can start day 1.
At center, no top end guys. Highest grade he has is 4th round. Order he has them in is Hecht, Slaughter, Parker II, Lew, all around the same range.

This is in part why I think the draft community's love of the WR class this year is somewhat exaggerated. It's a decent class, but I don't love it as much as it is often made out to be.

So with the recent posts on Heidenreich, are you changing your mind on him being a late day 3 guy? He's one of the guys I had in my "guys I'm higher than consensus on" draft - I could see the 49ers consider him round 4.
Not as high on Randall. Too much of a WR rather than RB, in that I don't think teams will ever fear him running inside. At least Heidenreich gives some ability between the tackles.
I see Brian Peacock has started a conversation about who could be a "shock" pick at #27 (i.e., someone that would be well above consensus at that pick), ala Ricky Pearsall. I think it's worth having that sort of conversation, because after around pick 20-25, I think we could start seeing a lot of variance in team draft boards.
Peacock suggests Gabe Jacas, which I think is a pretty interesting one in that he's one of the few complete, 3-down edge players and his 2025 film is potentially better than a guy like TJ Parker who is more commonly mocked around that area.
I could see Christen Miller being an option at #27, who would be above consensus there. If they want to go something different, Chris Johnson I think is worthy of going that high as well. I've also previously mentioned that Germie Bernard is a guy I could see Shanahan really liking.
It's funny with Jacas. Nearly universally gets praised as a "my guy" by draftniks, with A LOT of people saying they like him above consensus, but very few people are then willing to rank him higher. I think part of that is he didn't test at the combine or his pro day, so he isn't getting the bump guys like Lawrence have seen, despite having film that is at least as good (I would say better).
But they are starting to. McShay now has him in his top 32. Fowler has outlined he and Zion Young are liked a lot more in league circles than in the draft community. I could easily see him get drafted top 40.

We know they often draft for immediate need early. There's two positions we know they will still be looking for potential starters at - edge pass rusher and OG. Don't see them going OG in round 1.
WR starters are set, and they are at least 4 deep they feel comfortable with. And I suspect they still hope Cowing and/ or Watson develop.
Let me put it another way - replace Jacas with the name of an edge you like. Can you see them taking that edge over a WR?
So you are saying it's definitely a WR, because they brought three WRs considered late first rounders in? We only know 4 guys so far. That in itself I think is interesting, as is that of the 4 we know, 3 are WRs expected to go that range.
Last year they met with Banks, Simmons and Conerly. Didn't draft an OT.
This also doesn't have much to do with what I was asking. If you replace Jacas with the name of an edge you like, and they meet with that player, can you see them going edge over WR?
They talked to Pearsall at the Senior Bowl only. They no doubt talked to Jacas (and many others) at the Senior Bowl this year.
What I am finding interesting is how little is being reported about 49ers meetings this year. We have usually heard of a lot more meetings by this time. Most other teams have significantly more known meetings than the 49ers this year atm. Keeping things very quiet for the most part.
The spector of counting on TW to play a full season gets smaller because of his age and injuries. Even if the 49ers get a full season from Williams, drafting a blue chip young Olineman is being pro-active. Caleb Lomu or Blake Miller could be studs for the future. Would it be a major surprise if the 49ers draft one of these guys at 27?
As I posted near the top - this isn't a good OT class. The guys likely to be available may develop into solid starters, but unlikely to be really good.
I can't imagine Shanahan being happy going from the likes of Staley and Williams to just a solid at best LT.
IIf you can't stop the run, you don't need pass rushers. You need them when it's second and third and long. Last year, they were constantly facing second and third and short, which is probably the biggest reason there were only 20 sacks. I'm not convinced we can set the edge, so we'll see how Bosa and Mykel recover from their injuries.
According to reports. The 49ers will be hosting Nigerian football player Uar Bernard. He tore-up testing events and his RAS was a perfect 10. He's a football late comer, but many teams are very impressed with his beastly athleticism. I couldn't find any highlights of him, which makes me think that any team that picks him will need to be very patient.

DeleteYes, a surprise, like Pearsall was a surprise. But then you think about it and can see why they did it.
DeleteAlso, not just a DE. He can be the OLB playing on the LOS in 5-man fronts. One of the reasons I could see him making sense for the 49ers.

I don't expect them to draft a player they haven't met with at 27.
